2016 tOSU Really Basic Defense Discussion

Buckeye Football Notebook: 'The twos are just as good as our ones'

BuckeyeFootballWide.jpg

Ohio State will be starting three new
defensive linemen this season — or actually four if you consider that Urban Meyer has tabbed junior defensive end Jalyn Holmes as one of three starters at defensive end.

While those numbers don't quite work, it does give you a picture of a defensive line that has made advances. Center Pat Elfein has seen those advances from winter workouts, through the spring, and now through training camp.

"The whole defensive line in general has gotten better from spring ball," he said. "Guys have continued to develop and guys that were inconsistent in the spring now run to the ball every play, and their technique has gotten better."

Meyer said that the Buckeyes plan on playing 8-10 defensive linemen, with as many as five rotating on the outside and the inside. What does Elflein think of that possibility?

"I’m expecting big things out of that defensive line," he said. "The twos are just as good as our ones. They have a lot of guys, so that’s great for them to rotate guys in and keep guys fresh."

Another area on the defense featuring three starters at two spots is the cornerback position. Gareon Conley is the established starter, but sophomores Denzel Ward and Marshon Lattimore battled all spring and summer to play alongside him. Turns out that they both played well enough to earn the job, and so there will now be a three-man rotation here as well.

OHIO STATE’S PLAN TO REPLACE TRACY SPRINKLE: EXPECT EVEN MORE ROTATION ON THE INTERIOR OF THE DEFENSIVE LINE

73764_h.jpg,qitok=Oc2Gvw-W.pagespeed.ce.OXeJFGsAYF.jpg

Despite rather pedestrian numbers to date — 17 career appearances, only 1 start and four career tackles — Tracy Sprinkle was expected to be a major contributor to Ohio State’s defensive line this fall.

Don’t take my word for it, though. Here is Buckeyes junior defensive end Jalyn Holmes following his team’s 77-10 season-opening victory over Bowling Green on Saturday, a game in which Sprinkle suffered a likely season-ending injury:

“Tracy is the heart of the D-line, man, and it was hard dealing with that in the locker room. He’s everything to the D-linemen and I just feel for him right now. He’s everything to us and it’s going to be hard to replace him but he’s going to be with us throughout the whole process.

“I feel like we’ll be OK, but that’s a soldier that went down today and everybody felt that on the team and now we’ve gotta do our best to replace that.”

Those are certainly strong words from Holmes. Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and defensive line coach Larry Johnson all shared similar sentiments, too. Sprinkle had worked hard, waited a long time for his chance to play and his injury was a difficult thing for his teammates to deal with.

The season will go on, though, and now the Buckeyes have to figure out a way to replace a starter up front. Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer called the injury to Sprinkle a “big loss” Monday, and Johnson was later asked about the Buckeyes’ plan of attack to replace him.

“I think they’ve all got to step up; I don’t think it’s just one guy,” Johnson said. “It’s a group of guys who now have to carry the load for us.”

I like the idea of more rotation on the interior. Fresh bodies throughout the game and getting expereience. Hurts to lose Sprinkle but I think the talent behind him can do well. What's the status of Jashon Cornell if anyone can fill me in on where he is at, at this point.

The situation is grim. No celebration allowed. NG. Situation yellow.

1. The tOSU defense gave up 244 yards to Bowling Green. The tSUN defense gave up 232 yards to Hawaii.
2 tOSU only had 2 sacks against Bowling Green, while tSUN had 4 sacks against Hawaii.
3. The tOSU defense only scored 7 points. The tSUN defense scored 14 points.

I'm confused, are you being sarcastic? You can't seriously be worried about our defense after 1 game

I am not actually worried about our defense. It is more that I see the new tSUN defensive coordinator as a credible threat, worth careful monitoring.
Their defense had three straight shutouts last year and was the leading rush defense (or close to it) in the country when we went the Pig House and ran roughshod over it...

FILM STUDY: MALIK HOOKER'S CRITICAL ROLE IN THE NEW OHIO STATE SECONDARY

73703_h.jpg,qitok=alnL2i_q.pagespeed.ce.2fCsPsflzA.jpg

With only six returning starters for the 2016 season, there were many choices for prognosticators of such a category. But after two interceptions during his first game as a starter in the Ohio State secondary, the sophomore free safety from New Castle, Pennsylvania already seems destined to be 'the next great defensive back' in Columbus.

As a redshirt freshman last fall, the former basketball star saw action in all 13 games, mostly on special teams, while backing up star safeties Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell. After both departed for the NFL last winter, many expected Hooker to fill the void left behind by at least one member of the talented duo. But while Hooker is lining up at free safety, the position manned by Bell during the previous two seasons, Hooker's role in the Buckeye secondary is very different to the one Bell held.

While the New Orleans Saints' second-round draft pick certainly made a number of plays during his Buckeye career, picking off nine passes over three seasons, his big plays rarely looked like the ones Hooker made in his first start. By now, nearly everyone has seen his ridiculous circus catch in the second quarter in which he tipped the ball out of the air, only to catch it while falling to the ground.

Instead of allowing SAM linebacker Chris Worley, lined up in the alley between the left tackle and slot receiver, to cover the curl/flat zone underneath to that side, he immediately had eyes in the backfield while strong safety Damon Webb rolled up quickly at the snap to cover the slot receiver in solo coverage.

And IIRC, during the game we equaled the number of rushing TDs in the Red Zone they gave up all year. Playing butter soft schedules like they have can hide a lot of problems... in stats and frankly, from coaching.

Yep...they had given up five red-zone rushing TDs all season going into The Game and we put five on them...
