2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

For those that know more than I do (which is most everyone her), what in the world happened to the pre-snap motions we ran under Herman and into 2015? It seemed like that always gave us a numbers advantage. I haven't seen anything like that all year. Frustrating and unforgivable.

brought this up today with a co worker. Such piss and vinegar early in the season and now it's just like "can we just get the game over with" early bye week will do that

That bye week couldn't have come at a worst time. Strategically it would have been much better set up for a week such as this week. If you compare the schedules of TTUN, Nebraska, and ours it's night and day.

Through nearly 2 months of play TTUN has went on the road twice - Rutgers and MSU (Rutgers being 6 games into the season and MSU 2 weeks after their bye). Nebraska has went on the road to face NW, Indy, and most recently Wisconsin. Their schedule is laughable in terms of the amount of true tests they face this year and in what environment they do so.

Through 2 months of play, Ohio State has been on the road 3 times, all of which were played in prime time: Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Penn State. This week will be the 3rd week (out of 4) with a late night set up vs a top 25 opponent. We have 2, back-to-back road game stretches. This years schedule couldn't have happened to a more inexperienced team. This is the type of schedule you want a season group of veterans to play out. Guys with the stamina and knowledge, not a bunch of first year starters. So yes, play calling and execution haven't been up to par. But let's not overlook things like scheduling and conditioning.

We could've controlled our bye week and we failed to do that do a big fail there.

I agree though that it definately hurts us but make no mistake we aren't helping ourselves either. The ironic thing is if we just put teams away fast then our starters are done by halftime.

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-...state-offenses-ongoing-battle-against-cover-3

"In recent weeks, a pattern has emerged. Despite completing 65 percent of his passes and not turning the ball over during the past two games, somehow quarterback J.T. Barrett has drawn the ire of some within the Ohio State fanbase as the passing game has struggled to generate big plays."

After reading a couple of the articles over on 11W from the X & O guru's and the comments from Meyer I have to say I feel better.

So I've got that going for me

which is nice

Yeah I mean no turnovers and high competition is great but not forcing a team to quit the cover 3 is where the staff needs to figure out.

If it's effectively taking away what we want to do then there must be some plays in place to get them out of it so we can then take a shot deep

Urban Meyer needs to overhaul his passing offense and in some ways his entire offense in the offseason, whether that's scheme changes or staff personnel changes or both. With the talent Ohio State has, especially relative to the rest of the B1G, there's no reason for the passing game to be as underwhelming as it has been the past season and a half. And I'm not just bashing him in a reactionary manner b/c they have been OK at best for a month. I understand he's a great coach and there's literally no other college coach I'd rather have leading the Buckeyes out of the tunnel. But I think it's time for some change---in the same way Saban (or any number of coaches) changed his offense fairly substantially in the past couple of years.

Agree 100%....but also-long TD to Noah Brown in the OK game was against cover 3. We just said "screw it" and took a kill shot with our most skilled offensive player.

Can we just get one of these guys to be a Dane Sanzenbacher type? You guys are worried about deep threat, I'm confused how none of these guys can either beat a LB for an easy pass or settle in an open area.

It's like they literally run to a defender and turn around.
To have a deep threat yes we need someone to show up like Coal Beasley or a Dane type. under neath coverage beater which will force teams to come under neath.

I'm not a huge fan of going deep i consider it a wasted play to be honest. However we need to take 1 shot per quarter IMO.

Agreed. The deep threat is overrated, JT should be able to hit open men(if they can ever get open), move the chains and put points on the board. JT ain't Cardale, and as good as Devin was, he was a one trick pony hence when he's even healthy in the NFL, he's hardly utilized. But a guy like Michael Thomas who got separation and fought for jump balls is tearing the league up as a rookie. Everyone is trying to be the next Ginn and Smith but not willing to be possession WRs like Dane, Gonzo, Robo, Hartline, etc

Nice. it's because it's not sexy to not score and to move the sticks. These kids want to score and the only one who looks like they embrace that role is Noah.

Let me ask you all what is probably a chicken or egg question. Offense has just been hard the past few weeks. Struggling to get first downs, struggling in the passing game, scoring and yards are down, less explosive plays, yada, yada, yada. What is the origin of that? Is it the players forcing the coaching staff to take us back to their version of Tressel-ball, or is it the coaching staff playing it more safe as they began to try to win B1G football games?

I've heard a lot of our fans saying in some form, "Just let 'er rip." I guess what I'm not sure about is whether the players are the impetus for this tighter form of offense or is it the OC's and off staff puckering up because of the stakes.

The consequences of performing like that - and the defense is giving up yards and points too and the special teams have decided to get some kicks blocked - is everyone thinks you are beatable. It's much harder to defeat a team that believes than one who is thinking coming in, "We are about to get killed. I hope we can keep them under 50 and score at least once." Losing that intimidation factor is no small thing.
