2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

Do you guys think we could be struggling because teams in the B1G really play good defense?

I'm watching Wisconsin vs NW and I must say it struck me that we may be struggling because these teams are just really good. Against the crap teams and Oklahoma we rolled (no defensive standard in the big 12) but Indiana, PSU, Wisconsin, and NWU are really good on defense.

Not to mention having to play Nebraska, MSU and scum.

When you are as young as we are and are playing good defenses perhaps you just end up not being as strong as you'd like

ON PRIMETIME STAGE, OHIO STATE'S OFFENSE REMINDED EVERYBODY HOW GOOD IT CAN BE

Urban Meyer strolled to the podium following his team’s 59-point victory Saturday night, glanced down at the stat sheet and took a deep breath.

“Wow,” Ohio State’s head coach said. “I didn’t see this one coming.”

Nobody really did.

The Buckeyes routed Nebraska on Saturday night, 62-3, in a battle that featured two top-10 teams.

Well, at least on paper. Ohio State simply overwhelmed the Huskers in every phase of the game, but perhaps the most impressive performance of the evening came from the Buckeyes’ offense which, if you hadn’t heard, had been rather inconsistent in recent weeks.

On Saturday night, it was anything but. Ohio State racked up 590 yards of total offense, J.T. Barrett threw four touchdown passes and the Buckeyes featured Curtis Samuel the way he needed to be featured as the junior swiss army knife had 178 total yards on 13 touches.

“Just an A to Z, very good performance by our guys,” Meyer said.

Wisky vs Ohio State is always such a physical game too. We've lost quite a few head scratchers the week after that matchup.
I formally withdraw my concerns and complaints about the OSU offense - at least for a week. LOL. Good Lord. Sat night was incredible.

JT was so good on 3rd down. He still has some accuracy issues down the field, but I'm ashamed to mention it.

We are not that good and NU is not that bad. We were due for a "get right" game, and I do believe that when you play Wisconsin, you feel it a week later. It didn't work out too well for us either. :)

The perfect game plan led to Ohio State’s rout over Nebraska

Everything clicked against the Cornhuskers.

Finally.

Ed Warinner and Tim Beck put together a balanced game plan that got J.T. Barrett into rhythm early, which then opened up the running game. Not only was Barrett in sync, but they got Curtis Samuel a bunch of touches in a variety of ways and who would have guessed? It led to a 59-point shellacking of the No. 10 team in the country.

Even though the offense scored on every single possession, it wasn’t perfect. It was almost flawless, but there were a few things that Barrett could have done better, which could have be the difference against a better team defense (Michigan). All in all, the offense rolled on all-cylinders though, and showed Ohio State's true potential against a worthy adversary.

IN STOMPING OF MARYLAND, OHIO STATE SCORES AT LEAST 60 POINTS IN BACK-TO-BACK GAMES FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1996

There are different ways to describe dominance. Dropping at least 60 points in back-to-back games is a pretty good place to start.

Ohio State did that on Saturday, throttling an overmatched and talent-depleted Maryland squad on its home turf, 62-3. The No. 5 Buckeyes defeated Nebraska by the same score one week earlier in Columbus.

The back-to-back scoring barrages are the first time the Ohio State football program topped the 60-point plateau in consecutive contests since the 1996 season. That year, the Buckeyes swamped Rice 70-7 and then Pittsburgh 72-0 in the first two games of the season.

A fun highlight from that Pittsburgh destruction was David Boston returning a punt for a touchdown even though he represented one of eight Buckeyes on the field as he ran it back to the end zone.

OHIO STATE'S WIDE RECEIVERS ANSWERED URBAN MEYER'S CALL THE LAST TWO WEEKS

76644_h.jpg,qitok=Gnq-05vv.pagespeed.ce.0-KNYsW48-.jpg

Urban Meyer challenged Ohio State’s wide receivers following a loss to Penn State three weeks ago.

It’s safe to say the Buckeyes’ head coach is pleased with how that group responded.

“On offense, we had the receivers, back-to-back their best games,” Meyer said Monday during his weekly press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against Michigan State.

Fresh off back-to-back 59-point wins, Ohio State looks like itself again on offense. The Buckeyes racked up 581 yards of total offense in Saturday’s 62-3 rout of Maryland and all is well again in Columbus.

That’s because the explosion is back for Ohio State as it is finally hitting some big plays — in both the passing and running game. The run plays, Meyer said, are thanks in large part to the blocking of the Buckeyes' wide receivers.

“Their blocking two weeks in a row was outstanding,” Meyer said. “A lot of those big hits, you can see it. Noah Brown, Parris Campbell, K.J. Hill, Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel, just selfless play.”

Ohio State’s wide receiver room is deep, but nobody outside of Brown and Samuel (if you count him as a wide receiver) really solidified themselves as a consistent option yet this season. The rotation is long, and sometimes the production, at least on the stats sheet, hasn’t necessarily been there.
