2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

That was the problem last year. Evan Spencer would not be recruited by Meyer today but they missed him badly last year. Worse yet, they also lost Corey Smith and Noah brown, two other key role players.

Then there's the matter of the line and te position not blocking within miles of their former selves.

OSU has plenty of talent. Do they have consistent receivers and blockers? If so, they can reach the playoffs. If not, they'll only look good on highlight reels.

Excellent points. The stuff you're talking about is the difference between a team being more than the sum of its parts (like Sparty so often is) or a good bit less (Michigan's been this, for many years now).

Josh, maybe the highly paid assistant staff will review the film and come to the same conclusion, and then TEACH (after coaches are primarily teachers aren't they?), what the newbies have to do, you would think. Of course, in the heat of battle, the kids have to be cool, calm and collected enough to apply the lessons they have learned. We have great talent, great coaches, and hopefully the heart to excel, when all you really want to do is sit down. From what I've read/imputed, Urban named the captains with the intent of them starting to instill that which is necessary in the above post. Good plan, and from what I've read/imputed, these guys are working with the newbies hammer and tongs. Sounds good, and we'll see the proof of the pudding early this year. Hope the finished product tastes/looks as good as the individual ingredients (nice allegory from a cooking show, yes?). Anyway, it's still GO BUCKS!

Another thought. Wasn't Elflein one of the ones Urban didn't want? He turned out pretty well, a pre-season first team All-American in a position he hasn't started in, merely substituted. These are all his recruits now, and all his coaching choices. Time to work some magic......

NEW CROP OF WIDE RECEIVERS MUST EMERGE FOR OHIO STATE IN 2016

72107_h.jpg,qitok=eqmejBHh.pagespeed.ce.xYas4o1Oo6.jpg

A quick glance at Ohio State's depth chart from its Fiesta Bowl matchup against Notre Dame reveals quite a few names no longer with the program. You already know that story.

The Buckeyes exported 12 draft picks to the NFL in late April and three more players signed with franchises as free agents. That, coupled with the graduation of 18 seniors leaves just six returning starters ahead of 2016 fall camp. But the biggest hit to the offensive side of the ball is at pass catching positions.

Ohio State's leading returning receiver is H-back Curtis Samuel, who logged only 289 yards and two touchdowns last season. Michael Thomas now plays for the New Orleans Saints, Jalin Marshall is in New York trying to make the Jets roster and the Houston Texans drafted Braxton Miller. Additionally, tight end Nick Vannett is in Seattle as a member of the Seahawks.

In their defense, Ohio State's quarterback situation and the presence of 2015 Silver Football winner running back Ezekiel Elliott did not lead to the most explosive numbers on the outside for the Buckeyes last year. Thomas' 781 receiving yards were 83rd-most in the country. Plus, injuries to Corey Smith and Noah Brown wrecked the unit's depth.

So it is obvious the Buckeyes need more from their wide receivers this fall to bring more balance to the offense and thus better opportunities to score points. Wide receivers coach Zach Smith believes the group as a whole took a proper step forward in spring practice.

"I had a number of guys, really my whole group had a great spring," Smith said in April. "I can't single out one guy for making the biggest jump."

Here is a brief breakdown of each wide receiver available to quarterback J.T. Barrett, Urban Meyer, Ed Warinner, Tim Beck and Smith with fall camp under a month away.

COREY SMITH
It makes the most sense to start with the elder statesmen in the room, and that is certainly Smith. He received a sixth-year of eligibility from the NCAA after suffering a broken leg during Ohio State's 31-24 victory at Indiana in October.

Smith's career receiving numbers at Ohio State won't wow you (25 catches, 317 yards, no touchdowns) but getting back someone with his experience can only help Ohio State's wide receiver room. He also is a valuable member of multiple specials teams units and earned his degree this spring. Zach Smith expects him to be back in the fold and fully rehabbed from his injury this fall.

"He's rehabbing and trying to get healthy to have a great last year. He's been here like 10 years," Zach Smith said this spring, laughing. "I feel like I grew up with him, like he was a little kid that wouldn't leave me alone. He's been here a long time, he's a vet, he kind of knows who we run things and how the unit is expected to operate."

Corey Smith jogged around during warmups at the spring game but obviously did not participate. Ohio State desperately needs him to be 100 percent in 2016.

With the recent Dunn dismissal, I'm wondering if HBs like Wilson and Samuel will now get more looks at RB to provide depth. The RB room is now down to 2 freshman, both talented but very inexperienced.

I think Samuel definitely sees more snaps from the backfield now. Has to purely on depth alone. I thought he should have seen a few more touches from the RB position last year anyway. He was quite electric when he did get his seldom carry from the backfield.

I completely agree. Samuel is not a workhorse, but he finds a way to pick up yards. If he gets to the second level he is extremely dangerous. He's not the workhorse build that Meyer has come to lean on during his tenure. All being said, he gets yards. He moves the chains and he has paid his dues. I think this could be his season to burst into the national scene.

In the spring, which was mentioned in a couple "Dunn Dismissed" articles, Urban said he wanted Weber, Dunn, Samuel, and Wilson to all get carries. Now just switch out Dunn for Williams and maybe add some carries for McCall and the depth doesn't change much.

I think also Jt will also run the ball as he did his freshman year which isn't preferred but what's probably going to be necessary to help the young backs find space.

Option I'd like to see is Gibson take 5 snaps a game at QB to give JT a Break on taking many hits

Honestly Dunn being removed from the mix kills us. Very scared about the lack of true RBs right now. No 3 down backs or a real power back on the roster kills our versatility. Weber is the most complete back on the roster, and Williams didn't show that much explosion in the spring game but did show some power. Other than that all our other backs all fit the same mold of basically HB/undersized RBs/scat back in (Samuel, Wilson and McCall). Really I see a RB by committee approach as the only answer with the Weber/Samuel combo taking the majority of the snaps. RB blocking will be a big issue on passing downs.
