Former Cal, Ohio State football players qualify for Olympics

91293028.jpg

Former Ohio State walk-on Nate Ebner was named to the USA Men’s Seven Rugby team Monday and will compete in this Olympiad. As he’s a special teams standout with the New England Patriots, he’s the only current NFL player to qualify for the Olympics.

Ebner has a chance to become just the third man in history to win both a Super Bowl championship and an Olympic medal, joining Bob Hayes (Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, two-time gold medalist in sprints at the 1964 Games) and Michael Carter (San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle on three title teams, silver medalist in the shot put at the 1984 games). He would also become the first individual to medal in the Olympics, win a Super Bowl and win a Rose Bowl.

USA Rugby Names 2016 U.S. Olympic Men's Rugby Team

New England Patriot Nate Ebner joins Team USA after receiving his team's blessing to make a run at an Olympic dream. Ebner was the youngest-ever player to represent the Men's Sevens at age 17 and continued his rugby career at Ohio State University before joining the football team and subsequently being drafted into the NFL.

Following the week of training in Florida, the men will travel directly to Brazil Aug. 1. Friday's side will begin play at the XXXI Olympic Games Aug. 9-12 at Deodoro Stadium. The USA are seated in Pool A alongside host nation Brazil, Argentina and 2015-16 Sevens Series Champions Fiji.

Expert to Rio athletes: 'Don't put your head under water'

Just days ahead of the Olympic Games the waterways of Rio de Janeiro are as filthy as ever, contaminated with raw human sewage teeming with dangerous viruses and bacteria, according to a 16-month-long study commissioned by The Associated Press.

Not only are some 1,400 athletes at risk of getting violently ill in water competitions, but the AP's tests indicate that tourists also face potentially serious health risks on the golden beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana.

The AP's survey of the aquatic Olympic and Paralympic venues has revealed consistent and dangerously high levels of viruses from the pollution, a major black eye on Rio's Olympic project that has set off alarm bells among sailors, rowers and open-water swimmers.

The first results of the study published over a year ago showed viral levels at up to 1.7 million times what would be considered worrisome in the United States or Europe. At those concentrations, swimmers and athletes who ingest just three teaspoons of water are almost certain to be infected with viruses that can cause stomach and respiratory illnesses and more rarely heart and brain inflammation — although whether they actually fall ill depends on a series of factors including the strength of the individual's immune system.

Michael Phelps to carry U.S. flag during Opening Ceremony in Rio

Phelps, who has won 18 gold medals and will be competing in three individual events in Rio, was chosen for the honor in a vote of Team USA athletes. It will be his fifth Olympics since making his debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia.

Michael Phelps opens door for possible run at Tokyo in 2020

But in a room packed with more than 250 reporters from all over the globe Wednesday, Phelps left open the possibility of competing after Rio. And he did so without anyone even asking the question. He instead paused midway through an answer about what it will be like to compete in Rio with Boomer in the stands and said, "I'll say this just in case of a comeback ... my potential last Olympics," Phelps said. "Just so you guys don't beat me to death if I comeback. No, I'm not. But I'll just say that."

Phelps is scheduled to swim three events in Rio -- the 100- and 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley -- but could swim as many as six if coaches elect to put him on the 4x100- and 4x200-meter freestyle relay and the 4x100-meter medley relay. He's currently ranked No. 2 in the world in the 100 fly and 200 IM and sixth in the 200 fly. Should Phelps win gold in any of those events he would become the oldest gold medalist in Olympic swimming history.

Lord, but opening ceremonies are bizarre. What is the point of the group marching behind the ferris wheels with huge black cubes on their feet?
Is it a tribute to Howard Hughes and his Kleenex boxes?
