Many people outside the US find travel to the US very frustrating these days, due to the complex security environment. I've seen people on BBC, SkyNews, and other channels complaining that they were denied holiday visas without any reason given. I thought this was bunk until my niece, a university graduate with a really good job at KPMG, had exactly that experience. Chicago also has a terrible reputation internationally for crime. So, given the growing importance of the large emerging markets, perhaps Rio is not so surprising.

All of that said, who really cares? How many cities are still paying for the "privilege" of hosting the Olympic Games decades afterward. Right now, the US doesn't need any more debt.

Well done and good luck to Rio.

Good! If Chicago had gotten the Olympics it would have been a spectacle of clout, corruption and feeding at the public trough...from the aldermen who were already setting their cronies up to develop the venue sites to the cop union who was looking to get 4 hours of overtime for every 1 hour that would actually be needed.

Also, Daley would have been even more unresponsive and unanswerable for how he runs the city.

The only silver lining in Chicago getting the olympics would have been the possibility of a thorough upgrading of the L, but I seriously doubt we would have even gotten that.

Besides, they probably didn't like our sign:

I found that getting a Brazilian VISA to be "very frustrating" and expensive. :(
