2016-2017 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Before the season started I thought UConn was our best chance for an OOC T25 win. Too bad, they've sucked this year so far.

I thought we had a decent shot against UCLA but I didn't know that UCLA was gonna be this good and that we, apparently, would not have learned a thing from last season.

The loss to FAU is so killer. Now we have that blemish on our resume, that really bad loss. The bottom of the B1G is good enough this season that we could have avoided that kind of tarnish if we could have just taken care of business against the teams like FAU. But we didn't.

Now we really have to beat UConn or it puts us in a REALLY bad spot resume-wise that I don't think this team is good enough to recover from. Winning on a neutral court against #2 UCLA would make up for a lot but it'd be pretty foolhardy to hold one's breath for that given what this team has shown us so far (i.e. an inability to be consistent, to stay focused for 40 minutes, to avoid errors at critical junctures). UCLA is a team that is just gonna keep coming at you with their scoring and you can't afford any lapses against a team like that. This OSU team is 50% lapses.

I wonder how much of the issuses are the assistants. Early on how he had up and comers like Archie Miller, Brandon Miller, John Groce, Alan Major, etc.

Greg Paulus I think could be a good assistant down the line but maybe the move from video coordinator to assistant was too soon in his career. I'm not sure he's landed a top recruit since he moved up. Dave Dickerson got Ross and Williams but seems like his recruiting prowess isn't made as strong as Thad needs.

I don't see an elite recruiter on the staff like Groce or a guy who's a future head coach at the highest levels. Dickerson might get a low mid-major job and maybe down the line Paulus could get something but there's no guy that a Dayton/Xavier/etc. would be beating down the door for

To be fair I think talent has been down the past couple cycles outside of Bragg/Kennard in Ohio. Indiana, Purdue, Kentucky and Louisville being strong right now I think really hurt the Indiana pipeline and in the region general.

I appreciate Loving's attempt at leadership, but that it was necessary is disconcerting.

Loving pointed to the need not to let one defeat spiral into the next game. Doing that requires more energy and positivity among teammates, he said, and that was a focus of Thursday’s meeting.

“We needed it,” Loving said. “We didn’t have the best practice earlier in the day. There was a lot more chatter and energy throughout the gym (in the later practice), so just having those intangibles in practice of guys (picking) each other up or encouraging one another is huge for morale and confidence in everyone.”

Didn't have the best practice earlier in the day? The team's response to an embarrassing loss was a lackluster practice? Maybe I'm reading too much into it but I'd think they'd be pissed off, determined to never let that happen again. Hopefully, that's where their heads will be tonight. We'll see.

Matta's latest teams have just been soft- weak physically, as @DZ83CK has said weak at finishing through contact, mentally weak. Everything. There just seems to be no life in the program.

Been begging for years on here that I just want some tough basketball players. I'm over the lengthy group of 4 6'7" string-beans going out there and getting pushed around.

I said in the Matta thread I would hate to see the effort level in practice since they won't give any during games. You play like you practice.

The stories about Evan Turner working for hours in the middle of the night are notorious. I don't see any of these guys doing that.

One would like to think otherwise, but there is a complete lack of energy in the program. The excitement that was there before Coach Matta starting having more serious physical problems is gone. The recruiting is lackluster. The team effort is lackluster. It is very hard to believe that Coach had control of the locker room last year. It does not really seem that he has control there this year either. Something has to change.

Can't get energetic about playing for The Ohio State University? Wow.

Damn the ball at times rarely moves. 1 pass if we are lucky and that doesn't mean we are making one pass under the bucket for easy layups either. PASS THE FUCKING BALL

Edit - I think they heard me lol Now the ball is moving and we are scoring and the announcers are talking about how the ball needs to move.

Williams keeps throwing up threes and missing most of them (1 for 7, no rebounds, no assists, no 2 point attempts).

KBD ties it at 47. Please pull this out because I don't even want to think about what UCLA is going to do to the Bucks.
