2015 tOSU Defense Discussion

wasn't the whole problem but it was far from blameless
They held a team to 17 points. There were a lot of three and outs from our offense, not giving the D time to rest. Our offense scored on two fumbles in MSU territory.

If the offense could have some kind of drive in their last possession we could have at least given MSU a long field to try to drive for the game winning field goal and less time on the clock to make that drive. Instead we go 3 and out and give them the ball in our territory with 4 minutes to drive. We could have pushed it to OT with some kind of drive if not set up a field goal attempt. Did the offense drive the ball enough the whole game to get close enough for a field goal attempt? This loss was not on the Defense.

Agreed. And not to pinpoint one play or player, but man, that last offsides penalty on Bosa hurt. Dantonio was going for it on 4th and 8 from about OSU's 40, with MSU down 14-7. They probably have to pass on that play, something they hadn't done in the entire second half. Instead, they are able to call a running play on 4th and 3 after the penalty, and they convert. If OSU stops them on 4th and 8, we have the ball at our own 40 late in the game. I like our chances in that situation--even if we go 3 and out again, Cam probably pins them no worse than at their 25, and we're now very late in the game, and they need to drive the entire length of the field and score a TD just to tie. That offsides penalty was beyond huge.

That's the crazy thing about this game. There were big things wrong, obviously, like the offensive game plan and play calling, but there were also so many single plays that if they don't happen we probably win the game. That offsides, for one. The 35 yard pass Apple gave up on 3rd and 16 that led to a touchdown. Marshall dropping that 3rd down pass that would have allowed us to finally get some momentum on offense and possibly score. Somehow allowing Scott to get 20 yards on 1st down from their 2. I could go on but I might start crying.

Not to be lost in all the fun of blaming the offense for that fucking disaster, the defense gave up over 200 yards rushing at a 4 ypc clip to a team that couldn't run the ball all year, knowing they were going to run on almost every play.

Add to the ledger that they had the lead twice and gave it back on the ensuing drive each time.

Honestly as frustrating as the offense was, watching MSU just run it down the defenses throat was the most galling thing for me yesterday.
I was thinking about this yesterday as I watched Sparty run all day. I noticed that our DL splits are pretty wide and I was just wondering if anyone thought that might be a reason that we were unable to stop the run yesterday. I know that the linebackers are supposed to fill the holes but they are about 4-5 yards behind the defensive line.

Offense was hot garbage, that wasn't my point, but they did score two TD's when given two short fields to do so.

Each time they were given a 7 point lead in a close game, the defense let MSU's offense drive for the tying score.

Not sure why people have to try and deal in absolutes when football is such an interconnected game.

As bad as teh offense was, it put the defense in a position to win and the defense didn't hold up. Like I said, not all their fault but not completely blameless.

The defense cause and recovered the one of the fumble to set up the first TD. The special teams got the other fumble recovery to set up the second TD.

Correct me if I am wrong. Ohio State had 11 possessions in the game. SEVEN of those were three and outs. One was the one play scoring drive. Please explain to me how the offense put the defense in a position to win the game with only three real drives. The offense only had five first downs.

I already did explain it. You are ignoring it.

Defense had a 7 point lead not once but twice. Failed to keep it both times.

The majority of the blame obviously goes to the offense but the defense (coaches not players) gets their share share as well.

They let Sparty run it down their throat in the second half and did not (as near as I could tell) do a fucking thing to put the kids in a better position to stop the mauling.

The fact that Sparty was able to administer a mauling where they had been unable to do so to anyone else all year kind of raises a question about interior defensive talent but I'll leave most of my frustration with the coaches.
