Ohio State is back in New Orleans. What's a Buckeye to do?
The first thing Buckeyes and New Orleanians both should do is see
The Best Damn Band in The Land (aka
The Ohio State University Marching Band). It's a fact that if the football team could match the band's
astonishing precision and consistency, Ohio State would never lose.
The largest all-brass band in the world will have two free performances in New Orleans. One will come at
the Buckeye Bash, an Ohio State bowl tradition, which will be in Fulton Street on Dec. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. The Bash is probably something more appealing to the Buckeye faithful (e.g., Archie Griffin's speech), although we can always hope it will feature the band's moving rendition of
The Navy Hymn, a staple of pre-game "Skull Sessions" in Columbus.
Still, for those who love
"Hang On, Sloopy," for all decent people who
"Don't Give a Damn for the Whole State of Michigan," or for those who just want to see them
dot the i, the band will hold a rehearsal open to the public in Tad Gormley Stadium on Dec. 30 at 11 a.m.
Buckeyes' fans headquarters in New Orleans will be
the Mid City Yacht Club at 440 S. St. Patrick St., behind Jesuit and near I-10. Owner M.J. Sauer is an Ohio State alum, and she leads the Cajun Buckeyes, the local alumni association.
On Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. the Cajun Buckeyes will host a welcome party and a kickball game between Ohio State and Alabama alums at S. St. Patrick St. Park, right across from the bar. On Dec. 31 there will be a New Year's Eve party (the last shindig there attracted Will Smith, who won a national championship at Ohio State before becoming a New Orleans Saint, and Jonathan Wells, the former John Curtis standout who rushed for more than 100 yards and a touchdown in The Game his senior year).
On Jan. 1, the Yacht Club will hold a block party and have big screens set up starting at 10 a.m.
