Game Thread 2015 Sugar Bowl: (1) Alabama vs. (4) Ohio State, Jan 1st @ 8:30p ET, ESPN (civilized thread)

I think 5-10 yard dumps on a crossing route, over the middle to Huerman or Vannett will be played. It will be almost necessary to keep the LBs deep and allow the lineman to open up holes for Elliott.

I dont think however that will be used early. Its something that will be played when needed IMO.

My prediction for tomorrow:

- Evan Spencer and Mike Thomas will come up B1G (get it?...). Most will expect passes to Smith but he will likely be focused on heavily by Bama's defensive backfield. This will leave Spencer (great possession receiver) and Mike Thomas on dig and curl routes.

- Someone will be called for targeting. Im not sure who but testosterone will be flying and so will bodies.

- I think Elliott gets 2 TDs and 80 yards. He is a beast. I also expect to see a lot of options and gadgets involving Marshall and Wilson (selectively), as well as Samuel for a change-of-pace. Urban knows he needs to sell the run heavily to open up the deep balls that will eventually wear down Bama.

- Bama's hands will be on their hips come the 4th quarter. This is the most athletic team OSU has had since 2010 and it will show. The coaching staff has them in completely different shape and it showed in this years conference title game compared to 2013.
I disagree with your last point. Bama D played something like 92 snaps against auburn and looked fine.

"We sort of thought philosophically they would have a two-quarterback system because there's quite a bit of quarterback-run type plays that they would implement even if it was a non-quarterback at quarterback," Saban said. "(Marshall) has done some of that in the past and is a very, very capable player and an outstanding player doing that in high school. So we kind of looked at that as a great possibility and tried to practice some of those scenarios ― what they do and how they do it."

I found that interesting.

I was watching the Orange bowl, and there was an interesting fact that scrolled at the bottom of the screen. I'll paraphrase: The sugar bowl is the one where the two coaches leading the team have the most NC's (6) since Woody and the Bear clashed in 1978.

Not sure that OSU will run a 2 QB system for the majority of the game, but there is very high probability that we'll see this look more often in this game than in games past. We (OSU) need to have the ability to run from the QB position to keep Bama off balance (IMO). This is one means to get there, but it can't be too often as it keeps Marshall in a fixed position with Dontre Wilson most likely being a non-factor. I think we'll see very few designed runs from Jones in the game, which will be problematic in our offense. Broken or well defended plays may be our best option to get Jones running vertically.

I know I shouldn't, but I can't help but feel a little more confident going into the game tomorrow with the SEC West struggling like it has. It's looking more and more like those dominant SEC defenses are the result of shitty QB play. The three competent QBs (Trickett, Prescott, and Marshall) they've played have lit them up. Ironically, Cardale Jones may be the best QB they've faced all year.

I don't think anybody has said the sec had elite defenses this year- except for ole miss.

You are right though, the qb play has been exceptionally poor. Bro ballace had a bad game by even his standards, and Dak has been on a steady decline since the bama game.

Bama follows the famed "process." When things deviate from exactly what they have been taught (broken plays, johnny being better than imagined, marshall having a good throwing game, etc) the kids don't respond well. The kids become so brainwashed by it, that if they aren't in their perfect play, they freak out and don't just let their athleticism show. OSU can take advantage of that.

I feel less confident than I did earlier today. I was at 60-40 for bama, but that it is rapidly getting closer to a 50-50 confidence level.

Something I haven't seen talked about is the benefit of Miller and Barrett's maturity.

These two failed to address the media as they don't want to be distractions. Bet your dollars though they will be seated strategically near the players bench, Cardale in particular. They know they don't need to be getting in the way of the players preparation, but I'm sure are aware of their benefit on the sideline.

Think about it if/when Sims has a bad series and goes 3-and-out, he will return to the bench getting consolation from backup QB and a position coach. He will stew and think until he's back on the field (typical rhetoric for any QB). When Cardale has a bad series he will be greeted by 2 Heisman contending POY's. They can help him with what exactly went wrong and what they saw. Help him fox what he may be having an issue based on their depth of knowledge in big games. This is a HUGE plus IMO.
