VARIOUS PERSONALITIES ON OHIO STATE'S ROSTER KEEP BUCKEYES LOOSE, FOCUSED

57040_h.jpg,qitok=26nZywjE.pagespeed.ce.QihRQjk8uX.jpg

In the first quarter of Ohio State's spring game, quarterback Cardale Jones unleashed his cannon of a right arm and threw a pass deep down the sideline intended for tight end Nick Vannett. The ball never made it to one of the Buckeyes' top pass catchers, though, as safety Tvyis Powell made a great break, stepped in front of Vannett and intercepted the pass attempt.

Powell returned the ball 38 yards down the sideline before Jones, who was wearing a black non-contact jersey, drilled him out of bounds. Powell hopped right up, however, put his arm around the 6-foot-5, 250-pound quarterback, extended it outward and pretended his hand was a camera as he snapped a fake selfie.

It was quite the funny moment, but one that shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone who knows anything about the relationship between Jones and Powell. The two are best friends and roommates, who describe their relationship as "father and son." Despite wearing that black jersey, Jones couldn't resist the urge to knock Powell off his feet after he picked off one of his passes.

"I’m looking at Nick (Vannett) the whole time and I see that he didn’t engage nobody. I’m looking at Cardale and he look at Nick and I say to myself, ‘I know he know that I know what he doing,’" Powell said following the game. "But he threw it anyway like — I guess he just, I felt disrespected when he threw it anyway. I had to show him why I’m dad and he’s son so I picked him off. That’s exactly how it went down.”

Jones and Powell are just two of the big personalities on Ohio State's roster. They're two guys who help keep the Buckeyes' locker room loose, constantly cracking jokes and playing pranks. There are others, too, of course. Vonn Bell, Darron Lee and Ezekiel Elliott are just a few that come to mind.

From everything you see and read about this team (i.e. 2015) you have to think that they will have great "team chemistry".

i am not certain our defense will be elite this year. Not saying they will have to be, but defenses win championships and with the loss of Bennett and Grant and a new middle LB, and with the lapses they had late in the regular season last year, I am not sure we will not be tested hard early on. I also think that MSU for instance is better off having one known starter at QB rather than having to spend a great portion of fall prep trying to figure out who it will be even if either of our guys might be superior to their QB. Again not saying MSU will be superior as a whole. I know I am reaching, but not I do have few concerns and I don't think I can call them the best team ever like some are. The change in OC is another disruption.

I keep seeing the line for Wisconsin at +10.5 vs Alabama.

What am I missing here?

Wisconsin is built for Bama's defense to destroy. Straight ahead power run game with no QB.

I know Bama's offense is in question at QB and RB depth but 10.5 seems low.

I think by the time we play MSU we will have any defensive "issues" resolved. And the guys replacing Bennett are both experienced seniors. Washington is better this year also. Now replacing Grant at corner may be an "issue".
Curtis Grant had a decent senior season. But he's always been just average at LBer. He's too stiff and doesn't get off blocks. He probably was playing out of position. McMillen is worlds better athletically and is settling in on his reads and will be an upgrade in the middle.
Will we really miss Herman? Warriner and Urban will be calling plays not Beck. Little disruption there.
The single biggest thing will be "motivation". Do they want it as much? That worries me the most.
And don't lose a game late. That would be very tough to overcome. I hate having MSU and TSUN back to back! How did that happen?

I agree with Wham. I haven't seen enough to say this defense is going to be great/elite. Obviously, what they did in the B1G CG was as good as it gets, but I was more impressed with holding the Ducks to 20. When you weigh that vs. being pretty leaky against Indiana and scUM, and giving up 35 to Bama, there is some inconsistency there that I cannot ignore. But they were so good on 3rd down in those last 3 games, so they were great there, but when I think of elite defense I think of allowing less than 100 on the ground and 200 in the air, and yielding something around 15 ppg or less. My memory is that the 2014 defense did not get a stop on 1st and goal all year until they did it against Oregon. Not good.

On paper they look like an elite bunch. They need a DT, a DE, and a CB to perform well, but Washington, Bosa, the linebacking corps, and the safeties are an accomplished and impressive bunch. Because of that, they have a really good chance of reincarnating the Silver Bullets of old, but I need to see it. But as was pointed out, they won't have to be elite - probably something between good and really good will do.

As you touched on, I'm worried about DT. I think we're going to be fine at DE and CB though. In fact I think we'll have one of the best back 7 in all of CFB. We're a Tommy Schutt performing well away from an elite defense IMO.

Could this be another tough start of a season for the Big?

10 biggest non conference games are probably:

Ohio State at Virginia Tech
Oregon at Michigan St
Wisconsin vs Alabama
TCU at Minnesota
Michigan at Utah
BYU at Michigan
Nebraska at Miami Fla
BYU at Nebraska
Stanford at Northwestern
Maryland at West Virginia

Bama and TCU waxing the two best teams in the B1G West would not be a great start. I honestly have no idea what to expect from Harbaugh's Wolverines, but if it were Hoke with that roster I'd predict 0-2 against Utah and BYU. Nebraska is in the same boat against the Canes and BYU: 2-0, 1-1, 0-2 ... none of those outcomes would really be a surprise to me. Don't think the Mildcats can withstand the pounding of Stanford Football(tm), unless Stanford is bad, in which case a win doesn't validate anything because Stanford forgot to play Stanford Football(tm).

If Sparty is 100% healthy I like them at home against the Ducks on the strength of superior line play on both sides. Sparty's defense may even be Dantonio-era Buckeye good. But if guys are dropping like flies... Yikes.

As has been the case for about seven or eight years now, I'm hoping for a solid showing, while fully expecting our conference brethren to shit the bed, because that's what they do.

Tommy Schutt is probably capable of being that guy that doesn't hurt you, but is unlikely capable of being a difference maker. I say that because if he was a difference maker, he would have probably made a difference already. I hope he does well, but if he doesn't, at some point in the season, I expect you will see one of the young fellas start to emerge. But as we sit here today, Schutt is a depth guy.

Wouldn't it be interesting if someone like Sam Hubbard would turn in a wrecking-ball type of performance against VT? For the rest of the season, you would have OT's peeing down their legs with Bosa + another impact DE to contend with.

As for CB, some people who appear know more than I do (which isn't saying a whole lot) say that Webb will eventually be the guy there, and Gareon will go to nickel back. FWIW

Can't see Wisconsin threatening Alabama. Those "tree stumps" Bama has on that line are perfect to build a wall and jam up Wisconsin's running game - just like the Buckeyes did. If that's what happens, then you will have Joel "The Yips" Stave trying to throw to beat Bama - without any outstanding players on the outside. Uh, yeah. If it turns out different, I will be very happy, but I just don't see it. Maybe Chryst will get Stave's head right.

TCU's defense was really bad at times last year. Well, it was bad pretty much all year. Patterson went to a spread attack to exploit Boykin's talents, and it took a toll on what had been TCU's strength. Unless Minny has miraculously found a passing game, I can't see them hanging with TCU - whether the Frogs field a functional defense or not. I also doubt the Gophers have another David Cobb hanging around. I would like to see TCU play that game in Nov, but given it's in early Sept, I'm not expecting good news for the B1G in this one either.
