B1G football schedule chart (PDF)

Looking at the schedules overall for the first time. Some random observations;

West
  • with all the strength in the East you can really start to see the scheduling gods make or break some teams in the West
  • Illinois could be the underdog in 7 of their 8 B1G games. Purdue is their one solid chance at a win and it's on the road. Uncle.
  • Wisconsin can suck my dick. Are you kidding me with that schedule? Their 2 opponents from the east are Maryland and Rutgers. @ Nebraska Oct 10 and @ Minny to end the season. That's it. Sure they get plungered by Bama to start the year but it's 9 wins guaranteed before you stuff the first quarter in the first marshmallow. Cocksuckers.
  • If Corn can beat Wisky at home on the 10th they still have a tricky schedule with a trip to Minny, Sparty at home and Farmageddon to end the year.
  • I have no idea what Northwester or Iowa are supposed to be like this year but the Wildcats got scUM and Penn State from the east while Iowa got Indiana and Maryland.
East
  • Oct 17th and Nov 21'st. Those are the dates of what is essentially a 2 round playoff for the East title
  • 28th is like a stage 3 tie breaker if necessary
  • Sparty does have the worst of it otherwise with a road game vs Nebraska Nov 7th
  • scUM schedule is moderately dangerous with Sparty, @Minny, @Penn State, The Game
  • Penn State schedule is Wisconish except for having to play @OSU and @Sparty. Both teams should have the officials rested, paid and ready to help keep the Penn State dynasty at bay.
It's getting closer.......

I'm thinking that they must have already sucked Delaney's to get a schedule like that....:roll1:

Well this seems as good of a place as any considering our offense resolves around our o line.. in our national championship celebration on stage to accept the championship trophy our offensive line was standing in formation from left to right Baldwin-Elflien-Boren-Price-Decker. Now that's a unit, they banded together and never broke formation even in celebration!

Can't wait baby

Just reading this makes me want to have those brisk fall days back, maybe some cider donuts to boot and the sounds of football on the tube all day on Saturday....best time of the year!

If things don't break right for some teams I think there might be some massive coaching overhauls in the B1G....Beckman, Hazell, Wilson, I'd say Ferentz but that'll never happen

I've been bitching about the free ride handed to Wisconsin for awhile now. When the whole realignment came out. I was thinking what the hell did Wisconsin ever do to get a free pass? There really isn't one single team that has the talent needed to overcome badger ball on that side of the conference. I'd like to think that Nebraska might be able to challenge them one day, but right now Wisconsin pretty much owns them at this point.

Bama should rape them early, not a 59-0 raping however. Fuck Bucky.

What changes would you make to the current alignment?

Kirk Ferentz will win COY despite not beating Iowa State

Wisconsin will get posthole diggered in a bowl they don't belong in with an inflated win total

At least one crapastic team will make a bowl (heres looking at you, Illinois) at 6-6 with a losing conference record...probably more than one

Jim Harbrau and Dantonio will start a war of words that will not end while they're both here

Purdue will suck

Miss anything?

Yeah their road to the B1G west title goes through Nebraska and Minnesota

I mean I know a reigning B1G COy is nothing to be taken lightly but it seems kind of a...soft schedule

In a snap decision just to answer you, I'd flip MSU to the west for anyone over there. If it wasn't for The Game..I'd send scUM over there for fun.

I think it's more than that though. I think the Big might have the worst fucking scheduling ideas in football. I get the 9 game conference schedule thing, but don't lock it in so far in advance.

No wiggle room at all to make an early season BIG matchup to showcase the conference. Hell we have to play MSU the week before the game. I'd much rather play them the 2nd or 3rd week of the season. It would give the losing team a chance to recover both physically and in the polls. Instead it's the two most physical games of the year back to back to end the regular season. I'm not saying we need a SEC level cupcake between the two, but one of the "I" schools would be nice.

And just to add to the post cinci just made..yes it's a bad idea. If all four of those schools are at full strength and returned to glory, any 1 of them can end a NC run despite beating Wisconsin in the championship game. :)

Putting Ohio State and Michigan in the same division is refusing to respect and learn from the past.
Totally disagree. I hated it when they put OSU and scum in different divisions, and opened the possibility of a rematch in the CCG just a week later which totally would've destroyed the sanctity of The Game. Fortunately that never happened. Keeping them in the same division eliminates the rematch possibility and is the only correct course of action.

I voiced concerns about divisional imbalance when the realignment was announced, and I believe it's come to fruition. The gap is exacerbated at the moment due to Michigan State's very rapid rise coinciding with downturns at both Nebraska and Iowa.

As I see it, the success of schools like Wisconsin and Michigan State are not at all set in stone and largely depend on singular coaches and administrations. 10 years ago, MSU was mediocre. In 10 years, they might be again. Same goes for Wisconsin, Iowa, etc.

The West NEEDS Nebraska - and to a lesser extent Iowa - to return to prominence. It cannot just be Wisconsin.

It took Alvarez three years to turn Wisconsin around, but since 1993 Wisconsin has been decent-to-really-good on a pretty consistent basis. During that time, they have a record of 119-52-4 (.691), with nine 10+ win seasons and only two losing seasons.

There is always going to be an imbalance.

There isn't a major sport I can think of that hasn't had the same kind of thing and then seen it swing completely the other direction in my lifetime.

It is what what it is, they are a solid team in a weak division. Nothing that can be "done" about it but it sure as hell isn't above being noticed.

There are only two programs in the Big Ten that are all but guaranteed to be successful across long stretches of history. Ohio State and Michigan. Facilities, income, alum and booster programs and established winning traditions are more than likely to keep that in place. Two more programs, Penn State and Nebraska would seem to be capable of joining the top rung of the conference. Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa and Minnesota -as others here have noted- will go up and down.

Last game of the year does not make The Game special. It's the long term quality of the two teams. You can't set up a schedule that eliminates the possibility of two teams having to play each other twice, or even twice in a row, in a CCG set up. But you can look at the long term records of all the teams and realize that Ohio State and Michigan have the most likely chance of being the two best teams in the conference. Putting them in the same division guarantees that the CCG will frequently not be a true CCG.
