2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

A quarterback's most important attribute is not his arm nor is it his legs. The most prolific passer in NFL history does not have the best arm. Not by a mile. Nor does he have any legs to speak of. However, Peyton Manning knows the game backwards, forwards, and inside out.

A quarterback's most important attribute is his BRAIN, and the ability to process information very, very quickly.

I'm getting hard just thinking about how good JTB can be once he has full mastery of the offense, and is allowed to make calls at the line.

Next summer is going to be insufferable.

Yep.

I think what you say is true - intelligence helps in any endeavor - but I've known a few guys who couldn't spell cat if you spotted them the c and the a who, nevertheless, could go through a progression and hit a receiver on time, in stride.

I think what separates the goods from the greats in the passing game is accuracy. I think the greats put the ball where it can be caught a greater amount of the time than the goods. And I'm not sure that accuracy can be taught. It can maybe be enhanced with coaching, but I sense it is an innate gift. Braxton is a good throwing QB. His greatest innate gift is in those legs, not that arm. JT has the potential to be great in the passing game because of, I believe, his accuracy.

I'm still amazed by this thread. JT has looked great, but it's against absolutely AWFUL teams. Sorry Maryland and Rutgers, but yes, I'm including you guys in the awful defense group. After everything we've seen Braxton do during the last 3 years, I'm shocked that we are so quick to anoint his successor.

I agree. I think people are forgetting that while JT has played very solid against the likes of (total defense): Kent State (98), Cincy (120) Maryland (100), and Rutgers (82). The one time he played a good defensive team he did struggle, Virginia Tech (#20). He had a 31% completion rating, 1 TD, 3 INTs, and 1 rushing TD Virginia Tech.

I think people are quickly forgetting that last year Braxton Miller was either very efficient with his arms or legs against some of the best defensive teams our schedule had to offer:
vs Wisconsin (#15) - 4 pass TDs, 0 INTs, 198 yards, 68% comp, 83 rush yards
vs Penn St (# 29) - 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 252 yards, 75% comp, 68 rush yards, 2 TDs
vs Michigan (#13) - 2 pass TDs, 1 INT, 133 pass yards, 153 rush yards, 3 TDs

Against MSU Miller completely fell on his face in terms of his passing - 38% comp and 1 TD, but he was very dynamic with his rushing abilities, racking up 142 yards and 2 TDs. Clemson wasn't our best game as a team but Miller still managed to have a 234 yards passing, 2 TDs, 67% comp, and 2 rushing TDs. The downfall was his 2 picks thrown at crucial times.

I cannot honestly say right now that there is a QB controversy brewing when JT has yet to square off against a top level defense and walk away successfully. To anyone saying that JT Barrett's strong suite is passing efficiency, the same can be said for Miller. Last year Miller led the conference in passing efficiency and was 13th nationally. Miller is simply clutch with 6 game winning or overtime drives and a 22-2 career record (to include seven top 25 wins). He isn't just a good rusher and would have smashed plenty of Ohio State passing records (passing TDs, passing yards, offensive yards, and wins). With all that Miller has given the team, you cannot simply put him on the bench if he is 100% ready to go.

I disagree 100%. I think that if JT plays this well against Sparty, it OPENS the door for this debate. Until then, this debate is idiotic.

Agreed. One big game doesn't and shouldn't overshadow that of the 3-0 mark Braxton had in 2012 or the 2-2 he went in 2013. I hope JT goes out there and dominates and I believe it will speak volumes for his composure and leadership if we do win, but it shouldn't shut out a Braxton Miller return.

I'm inclined to give JT a pass on VTech as just his second game.
I'm also inclined to give Brax a pass on his entire freshman season for similar reasons along with Clemson since, even live, it was obvious he was playing hurt. In 20/20 hindsight, Guiton should've came in.

Braxton looked very improved throwing last year, up til playing in Champaign. After that his timing seemed off and the intermediate game completely disappeared.
I don't know what happened for the rest of the season (other QBs have played through weather), but ... the offense quickly became Brax + Hyde. Thomas' tweets during the Orange Bowl were right on the money, and I don't think it was entirely the receiver's fault.
And that's my only gripe with Braxton... a QB can be as amazing as he wants with his legs, but ultimately there are RBs (and Pivots) for that. The QB *has* to make good throws and decisions in the passing game beyond just scrambling. Narduzzi has proven he handles athletic QBs well, handles 1-dimensional offenses well. He did it with us last year, Stanford in the Rose Bowl (not a dual threat, but 1dimensional), and Nebraska this year. Oregon was able to beat him specifically because Mariota is the complete package -- yea, he's a burner like Brax, but he made important throws. Oregon was able to move the ball and his defense floundered in the second half.

Regardless, I think this issue gets resolved on its own.
This isn't a minor injury for a QB to come back from, and I don't think any NFL team will go near him as a QB given pre-existing questions and injury issues throughout his career.
I think he's playing a skill position next year - whether that's in Scarlet and Grey or with an NFL team.
I thought that before JT started putting up impressive numbers.

To me I'm going to wait until the end of the year to go any more into this.. I will leave one more parting thought though. I do not care about personal accolades when comparing the two It should be decided on who makes the others around them better, who can effectively general our team, and most importantly who gives us the best shot to WIN. If our offense sets records this year and we win against MSU and make a run the rest of the way it'll be hard to take the reigns away from JT.

Yes Braxton has all the awards but how many big ten championships and bowl victories do we have (and yes I will hold JT to the same standard)

JT is a better passer now than Braxton is now,has the ability to scramble out of the pocket, and already makes better reads on the D. Would rather have a pass first run second type QB and JT is that. Brax is a rare talent and great athlete but JT is a QB.

A lot of the talk about how JT struggled against VT is unfairly pointed at the QB (he most certainly had his struggles).....I think we forget how poorly the OL played and how poorly an offensive game was called by Herman. Those two areas have seen great improvement. When you're talking about making another QB change next year, you're changing a lot more than just the QB....you're doing protection changes on a young developing line, you're changing play calling, you're changing pick ups by the RB's, etc. I see a young team forming around their QB....to do the change once was a big change, but to do it this year, next year for Braxton, and again the following year for JT? Sorry, I don't see that as a good recipe....consistency is preached often by this staff and that doesn't fit the bill.

Braxton Miller is a QB and if he's Healthy he'll start and should. JT will have 2 more years to ball, nothing wrong with that. You guys penalize Braxton because he has great legs. Who wouldn't run Braxton and Hyde all day?

JT could conceivably leave after the 2015 season. Not saying he would, but don't automatically assume JT is here for 2 more years after Miller leaves.
