2014 Week 8 CFB Open Thread

Worst part? No, that actually makes the play funny.

I dunno, I really wanted ND to win this game. The sooner we can stop hearing about FSU the better.

We all know the Domers will choke in the end, and assuming the Pac, XII and SEC eat each other alive we may have seen them in a playoff game.

Not a fan of ND, closet or otherwise

Since when did it become akin to pedophilia to want ND to win a football game?

!! The last 10 years when teams have held opponents to 120 yards of offense or fewer, they are 127-2. Both losses belong to Will Muschamp.

I'm of the opinion ND got hosed. NCAA rules allows the contact the inside receiver made, which Herbie called "blocking." this is covered in 8(a)(b)1 of the NCAA rules.
The outside receiver, #7, on video shows him going up into the end zone, and breaking left toward the post, and the DB moving to intercept him, and bumping him. You can actually see right before the snap,
the defender on #7 was lined up about in front of the "E" painted on the grass, and when contact is made, he's about in front of the "L" painted on the grass. Unless ND can magically move DBs by thought....

Meanwhile, while the genius that is ACC officials meet to figure out what to hang ND with, one of the FSU players takes off his helmet, and no penalty. At WORST that's another shot from about the 9.

Now.
All that being said, being a Hurricanes fan, my ideal result was a fucking ASTEROID impact right about 9:30PM - a little late, to make sure ALL those fuckers were at the stadium, and seated.
Two birds, one BIG ASS stone...

Unfortunately, you're looking in the wrong section of the rulebook for how they threw this flag. My stepmother's ex has been an SEC alternate official for many years, and I asked him about that call. He gave me the following ruling:

EDIT: LINKIE TO THE RULEBOOK (http://www.dfoa.com/attachments/article/69/2013-14_Football_Rule_Book.pdf)

Illegal Contact and Pass Interference
ARTICLE 8.
a. During a down in which a legal forward pass crosses the neutral zone, illegal contact by Team A and Team B players is prohibited from the time
the ball is snapped until it is touched by any player or an official (A.R. 7-3-8-II).

b. Offensive pass interference by a Team A player beyond the neutral zone during a legal forward pass play in which a forward pass crosses the neutral zone is contact that interferes with a Team B eligible player. It is the responsibility of the offensive player to avoid the opponents. It is not offensive pass interference (A.R. 7-3-8-IV, V, X, XV and XVI):
1. When, after the snap, a Team A ineligible player immediately charges and contacts an opponent at a point not more than one yard beyond the neutral zone and does not continue the contact more than three yards beyond the neutral zone.
2. When two or more eligible players are making a simultaneous and bona fide attempt to reach, catch or bat the pass. Eligible players of either team have equal rights to the ball (A.R. 7-3-8-IX).
3. When the pass is in flight and two or more eligible players are in the area where they might receive or intercept the pass and an offensive player in that area impedes an opponent, and the pass is not catchable.
PENALTY15 yards from the previous spot [S33].

Another Edit: He just texted me with this one:

Unsportsmanlike Acts
ARTICLE 1. There shall be no unsportsmanlike conduct or any act that
interferes with orderly game administration on the part of players, substitutes,
coaches, authorized attendants or any other persons subject to the rules, before
the game, during the game or between periods. Infractions for these acts by
players are administered as either live-ball or dead-ball fouls depending on
when they occur. (A.R. 9-2-1-I-X)

a. Specifically prohibited acts and conduct include:
1. No player, substitute, coach or other person subject to the rules shall
use abusive, threatening or obscene language or gestures, or engage in
such acts that provoke ill will or are demeaning to an opponent, to game
officials or to the image of the game, including but not limited to:

A player removing his helmet after the ball is dead and before he
is in the team area (Exceptions: Team, media or injury timeouts;
equipment adjustment; through play; between periods; and during a
measurement for a first down).

FSU Player should have been flagged for this, would have been first and goal, Domer ball. Maybe we should have had B1G refs for the game. They would have called it:

Looks like the Mayor of Little Rock is resorting to begging Hog fans to buy tickets to the game against UGA on Saturday.
War Memorial Stadium has about 16k fewer seats than the campus stadium in Fayetteville, so maybe the crowd won't be as hostile against the Dawgs as I once thought.

I saw that, however, you cannot take only that ONE sentence in a vacuum... The subsection then goes on to list exceptions, which #1 is what the player did.

Let's face it, we ALL know EXACTLY what they were doing, and the trick is to make it NOT look like, well, what they were doing!

Sounds like you've had a lot of time to stew about pass interference.

I'm sorry, couldn't resist.
