2014 TSUN Shenanigans and Arguments

If it comes to it, I'm sure Harbaugh will happily take his millions from Michigan as he waits for an NFL team to give him exactly what he wants; that's clearly the end game whether it happens now or sometime in the future.

If he ends up at Michigan he'll always have an eye on the next NFL opening. This will be a huge source of tension in addition to the tension created by him being an unbearable asshole.

If it doesn't immediately start raining championships in Ann Arbor all of these things will come to a head quickly. I question whether even the great Harbaugh has the coaching skills to turn the team around before that happens.

It should be fun even if he does end up in AA.

The mess that's been left is a three year project at minimum. I don't care who they hire, it's three years at least. Is Harbaugh willing to wait that long? Does he have the patience? Is he willing to give up the "freedom" from the constant grind of selling scUM to recruits? Waiting on Harbaugh may pay dividends, but it also might screw the pooch if he winds up declining for remaining in the league. Bottom line is... I see a fitter Charlie Weiss, but with similar results in Ann Arbor. Regardless, I'm glad to be a buckeye.

He may go to Michigan, but all of this is wildly premature until the NFL teams actually get a crack at showing him what they have to offer. I just don't think he's totally ruled out staying in the NFL, in which case I still believe NFL teams (Raiders, Jets, etc.) will give him a lot to think about when they back up the Brinks truck at his front door and hand him the general manager position while they're at it. The only thing analogous Michigan could do is offer him the AD position, and they're not that dumb.

When your 2 and 12 in the 21st century you tend to lean heavily on optimism. I'm starting to think that if Harbaugh was on board and not using Michigan as bait he would have committed.

He's not going to publicly commit to UM while he's still the Niners head coach. Remember when Bo fired Bill Frieder in 89 after he accepted another job but said he was going to coach UM in the NCAA tournament? This is along the same lines, IMO. He's old school. He's not going to do the same thing Bo fired another guy for. In my IMO.

Whether he's using all this for bait or leverage will be found out in about 6 days.

Why not?
It's not like SF is playing for anything at this point.
When he doesn't say anything immediately after the game, what will the excuse be then?
Right now Michigan is just an offer on the table - a very public one driving up the asking price, and he's waiting for the season to be over so NFL teams can put up their offers.
SanFran is also very interested in seeing him stay in the NFL so they can leverage his contract.

Because it's his MO. He did the same thing at Stanford when they were asking him about the Niner's job as the season was coming to a close. He gave the exact same response. "I only talk about the job I have." I don't expect him to say anything until he's officially released from San Fran. Then we'll see what happens. I really don't know.

I'm sure San Fran is interested in seeing him stay, but they have zero leverage so they aren't getting anything for him. JH isn't going to agree to any trade that benefits San Fran. IMO

The roster is a 1 year rehabilitation to being a 9-3 team. However, it will take 3 years to get to where they want to be for one glaring reason: QB.

He can inject actual toughness in a hurry (instead of false bravado from the clapper) and you can add WR talent in a hurry. But they are severely lacking at QB and that's a tough position to fix overnight. Chances are he'll have to wait until the next class to land a stud, meaning year 2 is likely the beginning of the QB transition (and a rough one given most true frosh QBs).

So the story now is that he'll go college just to spite SanFran so they can't get anything out of a trade... but he won't take the job now because he doesn't want to ruffle feathers in SanFran.
It makes perfect sense.
