2014 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion

I seem to recollect from some post or another that Elfein was one of those that Urb wasn't 'too high on'. But when Elfein played against Michigan, he proved out to be pretty fair. Am confident that there will be some synergy developed between the kids will lead to someone on the first five that isn't listed in the above posts. Maybe Dodson, Lisle......don't know. The freshmen I think will need a year with Mariotti to rid themselves of babyfat and put on some solid muscle, and add techniques that were not taught in their HS (pass protection versus run offense blocking for example). Again, don't know what the kids were exposed to in HS, as it seems like the colleges go for body size, shape, potential to fill out, etc. and then teach the mechanics as they age. tOSU has always been blessed with great centers, who direct the linemen, and seem to pick up blitzes, etc. Hopefully Boren or ? are able to step into that role and help develop the OL. Boren seems to be 'cut of the same cloth' as his brothers, so that should be very favorable for tOSU OL. Also I hope that someone will step forward like Elfein and rise to the occasion as called upon. In my opinion, the season depends on it.

Go Bucks (I miss the emoticons).

Perhaps the most interesting dynamic to me will be the notable dropoff in size. Not necessarily stating this is tantamount to a dropoff in talent but Norwell (6'6 315), Linsley (6'3 300), and Hall (6'5 315) was a huge interior. Now we are looking at Elflein (6'3 285) and Boren (6'2 285) as two of the three interior linemen. The tackles might should stay the same though...of course Decker is one at 6'8 315 and Dodson, Baldwin, and Lisle are all about the same size as Jack. In any event, I am wondering if we see an altered blocking scheme considering this.

I would hope that Elflein and Boren will be hitting the weight room before the 2014. But think the blocking scheme will be the same.
why change that.

My guess: Decker-Farris-Boren-Elfein-Lisle

For those who forgot who Farris is, he was battling Decker for the RT spot in the spring and took the most reps at tackle outside of Mewhort and Decker, so I would expect him to be in the fold somewhere.

Biggest questions are RT and whether Boren has size to play center. If Boren can't, then I see Elfein/Price at C/RG. Lisle is the odds on favorite at RT IMO.

I think Boren is just fine at C; he looked pretty good at there this year when he was taking almost half the snaps for Linsley.

I speculate that it is simply related to ensuring there are enough people at that position to be able to practice, scrimmage, and play the spring game.
Agree with this. We only have 11 OL for spring compared to 12 DL. As a senior, Hale doesn't need a ton of defensive reps. Munger and Hill need a lot of snaps, especially Donovan as he wasn't cleared until January.

Farris just had surgery in mid-December, so I'd be surprised to see him full-go in spring. And anyone's guess which line he ends up on, he's not included in the counts above.

I must have missed this, is Munger working out with the team right now? Really would love to see what he can do.

Based on the past I think a lot of us are having a hard time getting used to this, but with Warinner I don't have any serious worries about the OL. I feel it's much like we used to be at LB; plug and play and find new stars. We have too much young talent to go with an elite OL coach to have this be a weak link for us. I'm more concerned about who will step up as a full time RB than I am here. Decker, Boren, and Elflein are a great start. Underwood and Baldwin are two vets and mix in young guys like Lisle, Knox, Dodson, Jones, etc. and the 5 best and most cohesive will be out there paving lanes for any and all.

Yeah, he's on the third unit with the other RS freshmen. (Hill/Sprinkle/Lewis).

Warriner praising Hale on the switch to OL

"(Hale) came to us as coaches and he wanted to see what my impression was (about moving from offense to defense)," said Warinner.

"When he looked at me and said 'Hey, what would you think of me playing O-line?' I said 'I would love for you to.'

"We went in and talked to Coach Meyer, and Coach Meyer thought it was a great idea because Joel can help us there. That gives us a veteran guy that's tough, that works hard, that has energy. He's an energy guy. He gives us a little juice over there too."

*SNIP*

"He just has a little development to do in the passing game, but it's really fluid. He and Tony Underwood will battle there at right guard," he said.

Interesting that Hale initiated the switch but I'm glad the staff was receptive to it.

So far the lines have been as such (L-R):
Decker-Underwood-Boren-Elflein-Baldwin
Dodson-Hale-Price-T. Brown-Lisle
Marcelys and Trout working with the 3s. Farris is back at OL but sitting out spring due to his injury.

LG - BATTLE: (Antonio Underwood, Evan Lisle, Demetrius Knox, Joel Hale)
RT - BATTLE: (Darryl Baldwin, Tommy Brown, Jamarco Jones)

It is disappointing to see Lisle out of the race for RT, because I figure the more the better. Same for penciled-in Demetrius Knox.

However, with 4 strong contenders at LG, it seems the someone will end up deserving it.

I wish secret weapon Chase Farris could play tackle.
