2014 tOSU Offense Discussion

LitlBuck

Kevin Warren is an ass
I know there are existing threads for 2014 OL discussion and WR discussion but I noticed that there is no thread for general offensive discussion so I thought I would start one with this link:
OSU's offensive lineup in 2014 could finally satisfy Urban Meyer's need for speed

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Urban Meyer has a need for speed.

In his short tenure at Ohio State, the coach has quickly stockpiled players who fit his offensive vision. The Buckeyes' latest recruiting class is no exception, with players such as Curtis Samuel, Parris Campbell and Johnnie Dixon, who all qualify as being fleet of foot.

They join Ezekiel Elliott, the favorite to assume a starting running back position left vacant by the departure of Carlos Hyde, and Dontre Wilson, the speedster who totaled 460 yards as a freshman.

"[They] are those prototype guys, hybrid-type players we're looking for," Meyer said. … "We have to get our speed up, [and also] overall offensive skill, but we have, from where it was two years ago to where it is now."
more

Wasn't it last year about this time when we were counting on the offense to carry the load until the defense could get up to speed? This year have to hope that both groups have enough talent for the frosh to get up to speed.

That said, I hope that the off-season will give the coaches more time to figure out how to get more touches for Dontre Wilson.

Man, it's going to be hard to replace Carlos Hyde. Will Ez E be the next great back from the Buckeyes?

He's supposed to be. But there's some months to be played out first. But it's certainly looking like it. But the next great RB in an urban Meyer system is different than past OSU coaches(though how he worked Hyde says different) in that he doesn't grind just one RB but uses multiple RBs in order to keep them fresh.

Warriner will have the starting line ready to play. Depth? Yikes. Health along the starting unit is huge. Beyond that I am most concerned with Braxton's development. I worry that he reverts back to happy feet. With a new line this will be easy to do because there will be growing pains as that unit comes together. I expect the WR group to be much better this year so that should help. If the starting line stays healthy and Brax makes the same/better improvement that he made last year the offense has a chance to be just as potent as there are more weapons offensively. Personally in the order of impact I rate the loss of Hyde after Brax and the Oline. How will the drop off in his last 5 games of '13 and the NFL scouting report impact Brax this offseason? That had to be a shot of reality. He finished the season very poorly. Can he learn from that and put in even more work this offseason? He has a stud Oline coach and enough talent that I expect the unit to be ok. The talent and speed at all the skill positions is by far the highest of Braxton's career. A great QB would be able to be very productive with these circumstances. Will be interesting to see how he handles it.

Actually, I'm not concerned about depth across the OL as much as I am finding 3 new starters without seeing much of a dropoff (I'm counting Elflein as a starter, he did a great job). The line we had last year was the best I can remember. There is plenty of ability across the line with Boren, Baldwin, Lisle, Underwood, Price, Dodson, Brown, Knox, J. Jones, Trout etc., we just need to find the right 5 that gels well. Luckily Braxton's scrambling ability makes any OL look pretty decent in the pass protection.

I have zero concerns at RB...tons of talent and I think EzE explodes next year and Dunn/Smith wear down the defense in between. I'm much more concerned on the passing game...tons of talent at receiver but unproven talent.

Like RB and jlb said, our passing game will be a big question mark for a while. We could have an entire new set of starters at WR, as I think smith and spencer will have to battle for their positions(as they should because neither did much last year) and though we have a lot of talent on paper, none is proven or much game experience. The most intriguing names to throw out are Corey Smith, Michael Thomas, Jeff Greene and johnnie Dixon on the outside. And in the slot, dontre Wilson, jalin Marshall, James Clark and Curtis Samuel. Seeing who starts will be an awesome battle to follow

Bob Hunter's Rumblings suggest that Joel Hale could be switching to the O-line:

Among those who could be in the mix is defensive tackle Joel Hale. Word from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center is that Hale, a senior who was a mainstay in the defensive line rotation the past two seasons, will be tried at offensive guard in the spring. The Greenwood, Ind., native was a two-way player in high school whose aggressiveness might prompt the switch.
