2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

Wow. A scheme where you read just one key.

Ash added that he expects his team to play one way: at full throttle. “Well, you play fast, you play with reckless abandon, you’re fast, you’re physical, you throw your body around. You play without hesitation,” Ash said. “There’s no confusion, you know exactly what you’re doing. You can react to your key and there’s only one speed: it’s full speed. And that’s the way we gotta play.”

Losing Mitchell hurts but the reality is he hadn't played a down yet so it's "next man up". We got a great bunch of freshman linebackers coming in so they'll get lots of opportunities to make an impact.

I remember reading that he was coming on middle of the yr. and Urban almost pulled the redshirt off him to play. If thats true no doubt he would have been a heavy fav. to start.

Losing Mitchell likely means we are going to have to rely on 1-2 freshmen to play significant time if we are to improve at LB. I think T. Johnson has to be a favorite to start one of the spots as well. With Shazier gone, the alternative is to hope that somehow the light comes on with Grant and Perry...as much as I would love that, I seriously doubt it from what we have seen so far. Also curious to see if we move Lee and/or Worley down to LB. In any event, the transfer makes me pretty skeptical that we see any improvement from the LBs.

I finally got the stomach to re-watch the Orange Bowl. Who really stood out to me was Jamal Marcus. Dude was making plays that I didn't see Spence make during the season. Pure hustle play and desire. If Marcus keeps playing at that level, Spence will have a tough time getting playing time away from Marcus! And I'm OK with that!

I'd maybe like to see Spence as OLB and play upfield with him getting Marcus, Spence and Bosa on the field at the same time. Considering our LB issues, it's worth a shot.
