2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

How Deep Will This Ohio State Defensive Line Go?

http://www.theozone.net/football/2014/SpringBall/HowDeepWillItGo.html

The Ohio State defensive line will be starting three five-star prospects, and the lone four-star runt is Michael Bennett, who was the highest-rated four-star defensive tackle in the nation in 2011 per Scout.

Behind them are a pair of former five-star linemen in defensive end Steve Miller and defensive tackle Tommy Schutt. Miller has had a fantastic spring, and Schutt is also finally healthy and excited about his opportunities.

I kind of like that fact that right now we have 4-5 cornerbacks in the secondary:
- Doran Grant
- Conley (or Apple)
- Armani
- Powell (formerly a CB)
- Burrows

That should help coverage.

If Vonn Bell wins his job back, then I have to assume he is pretty good at coverage.

Also, good to see that Doran Grant seems to be the fastest guy on the team.

Beautiful writeup and awesome news that we are getting back to the '02 style defense and using our studs to cause havoc. If the Dline dominates like they should everyone looks a lot better in this defense. Should be a great thing to watch when we are at full strength.

What gets me excited about our defense is we were very disruptive as a front in our spring game and that was with our starting 4 sitting out.

I'm pumped to see the back 7 playing correctly as far as their positioning and depth on the field.

Many times I'd watch our games last year and I'd be talking out loud saying "come up closer secondary!" Or " boy if they run this direction they'll out leverage us easily". To me we just looked aligned better with proper spacing let alone tightened coverage.

The only similarities between 02 and now would be the Dline play and possibly the linebackers. As I believe Cie Grant played Sam. As for the secondary calls? Quite different, I'd say.

Amazing how the 'old' homilies hold true. "It all starts up front" has been said and re-said for years. Last year the OL was outstanding, and tOSU offense set plenty of OSU records (and highly ranked O among college rankings). Last year the DL, not so much, and the D was not so good. This year (2014) the DL is a top 5 DL in nation, so I'm betting vcash that tOSU D will be highly effective in 2014 as well. The O, not so much, until it 'jells' 'comes together' 'works efficiently' or whatever else is used to 'blow the other D off the ball' and give Brax and the RBs room to operate. You heard Urb say it during spring game, 'what made that play work is that the QB had time to throw the ball'.....

"It all starts up front". Go Bucks

The D-line was hardly the problem with last year's defense. Three players in the top six in the B1G in sacks. In fact, it was really the only functional unit on that defense.

The DL was the only saving grace last year...I thought with a stellar DL it will mask a bad back 7, but it turns out the back 7 still has to at least be proficient to make for a good defense. Even with a solid pass rush, opposing offenses could go with quick hitters all day and shred us since our DBs were playing 10 yards off the receiver.
