2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

I think this is a very good defense that gets zero help from our offense/special teams...they are repeatedly put in no-win situations in their own territory right after they just got a stop. We need to get better at having our offense's back on the turnovers but still, they usually play pretty well otherwise. I agree we need more DL rotation...I'd like to see what Hill and Munger can do, along with more Schutt. Completely disagree on Perry...he is greatly improved and extremely active against the run and much improved in pass coverage. He already has 85 tackles, which leads the team by far (almost twice what the 2nd leader has in 54 tackles), 5.5 TFL, 1 INT, and a sack. He's playing extremely well. Now Raekwon has been inconsistent and Lee needs some more weight in the britches to stop the run...I do get frustrated watching the DL penetrate and seeing no LB fill the gap.

Not sure "excited" is the word I'd use to describe what I'm feeling in regards to our run D facing Melvin Gordon in the B1G title game

I honestly think it's a matter of gameplanning.

The talent is there to contain him (which may mean holding him under 200yds) but the defense has to execute.

We've seen 2 very talented backs in Lippett and Cobb and the defense did enough both games to not let them beat us.

The good news with Wisconsin, is that if we can force them to try and win with Stave... well, that's a game I'm confident we succeed in.

Defense gave up only 300 yd today.

Hard to keep the opponents out when you give them the ball deep in your own territory.

Are we perfect on D? Hardly, but we're not chopped liver out there.

DL Joey Bosa finished with 1.5 sacks and 2.5 TFL. He now has 11.5 sacks on the season, more than any Big Ten player had all of last season.

CB Doran Grant recorded his third INT of the season and the seventh of his career.

DB Vonn Bell also picked off a pass, his third of the season and the fourth of his career.

Ohio State leads the Big Ten with 16 INTs on the season.

From the Dispatch.

Melvin Gordon is a beast but Nebraska has made it a habit of horribly pooping the bed against Wisconsin. Let's not forget the Huskers let a 7-5 Badgers team run for 500 yards and drop 70 in the B1G championship.

Unless Wisconsin figures out how to throw the ball, I think Ohio State beats them should they play.

Their QB play has been atrocious in the games I have watched...I would love to see how our D does against him. If we shut him down (which means 100 yards or there abouts), JT could have a Heisman springboard if he plays well.

Amazingly our defense is a lot better against the pass than the run. Would not have thought that coming into the year. Struggling against the run lately

In lately do you mean the last 2 games? Minny had god awful conditions and turnovers put their offense in easy positions to score, and they had a terrible QB. MSU is a run based team with an above average QB, I kind of figured both teams would be able to run some on us. Idk if IU and scUM can replicate that kind of running success.

Agreed.

The two teams just played last year.

Not sure what Wisky is better at and OSU is worse at that would indicate a different outcome.

Wisky to me should be easier to defend this year then last year but as Minnesota should show us even when we know it's coming it doesn't mean we will stop it.

Wisky doesn't have #4 (won't even attempt to spell his name) burning us deep, they don't have Borland, and they don't have a back up that can spell Gordon like White did last year. If we get to play them I'll say it again just as I did against Minnesota you have got to dedicate 8 and 9 to the box to shut this guy down because if we play them straight up and respect their passing game we will lose.

Yeah I know everyone is going to say "Oh come on with the losing bull shit" but If we allow their running game to go for 300+ on us I do NOT like our odds. As RB has said, right now I feel our size up front (particularly with Darron Lee) is hurting us against teams who like to pound the ball. If Stave plays us and goes for 250 yards passing but we only give up 150 then consider it a WIN but the thing is I don't see Stave going for anymore than 220 if we give him the ability to throw downfield. STOP THE RUN AT ALL COSTS.

There isn't a single star on D, but they play extremely well together. Biegel, their OLB, fills the gaps extremely well. I would make the case that Wisconsin's defense is much improved over last years.

This. I was most concerned about LB position coming into the year, but really happy with how they're doing.

Think it's a product of our opponents and conference. This conference is stacked with excellent RBs, the league is notorious for letting a lot of holding go uncalled, and Navy will skew those stats too.
For people who like the other football, reminds me a bit of how the EPL lets people get away with a lot more contact than their Continental counterparts.

If we end up playing Wiscy it will become a shoot-out. A lot of scoring on both sides. That makes for good TV but indigestion for fans. I'll take a diverse offense over one dimensional every time. I'm hoping the Wiscy staff has another brain cramp and stops running every down.........
