That's kind of the real point though - offenses are going to get points for the most part nowadays. The best defenses now are the ones that make other teams get their points inefficiently. Ohio State allowed MSU to be pretty efficient late in the game, but frustrated them for most of the way before that.

Yep. Folks need to remember that from the time we were down 21-14 we went on a 28-3 run to go up 42-24 before loosening up the defense.

The shorter time of possession per drive resulting from the no huddle spread offense serves to extend the game and total numbers of plays and possessions by both teams. The net effect is similar to adding a fifth quarter to the game. Scores will be higher due to simple math, never mind due to the further exhaustion of the defenses.

The question is when a game comes around where you have to limit an offense and can't give up x points, will you be able to do it.

I think Ohio State has shown that they are capable of doing that by playing well in stretches. They just haven't given me enough evidence thus far to know that they WILL do it when they have to.

Minny is as close to a one dimensional team we have played this year, so if there is a decent team that is a candidate for the Buckeye D to be dominant against, this would be it. OSU needs to stuff the run, force pass, and make them pay when they do. If that's what happens, and Minny has single digits or something in that area at the end of the game, now I have something that shows me that they can defend for 4 qtrs vs a competent team. If they give up 20-30, that means that the offense has to win the game - and I'm telling you, that will come back to bite you in the butt at some point.

The defense has the following issues right now:

1) No Dlineman trust/depth.

2) Tyvis Powell is playing a poor safety. He cannot tackle vs the run game and it's been evident last two weeks. He's hesitant to commit and doesn't have the strength or ability to stick guys consistently. We need somebody to replace him. Hopefully Smith is ready by next year if not by bowl season.

3) Poor LB play vs the run. There isn't one LB fitting the run correctly or consistently. Lee is undersized but he's huge in our pass D and as a blitzer. Gotta hope with experience he'll be better vs the run.

At MLB Raekwon will own this spot, but right now you got to deal with frosh mistakes

The real concern for me is Perry. With his experience he needs to be doing more in games like the last two weeks. In my opinion he was glaringly weak in both games against the run. Would not be surprised if he's pushed by Booker or Hilliard next year like Rae pushed Grant

Fix those issues and this defense is close to be good again

Agreed. Keeping a good team to 300 yards is great. That gives our offense enough to win the game every time. We gave up more running because they couldn't do much passing. The first half felt like Navy 2.0. I hate to see us get gashed in the run game, but when our corners are holding out well in the run game, I'll take it.

Not chopped liver at all, but we simply aren't physical enough past the front 4. Haven't been for the past 3 years. The turnovers were a big disadvantage to the defense, no questioning that. But this Minny team lines up in a pro set and runs the ball either right at you or off-tackle, and we struggled against it to some level. We stopped it well at times, but Cobb averaged 5.4 yards/carry.

Urban has vocalized his disappointment with the d-line depth, and when you face a grinding, physical run game like we saw today, it's obvious. This D is good enough to help OSU win the BIG, and prob good enough to help OSU win the NC, but to me, that all depends on who we play. Alabama could give us fits on the ground after what we witnesses today.

Still very excited for this team - Go Bucks
