2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

I know this is never going away, but drives me nuts when analysts refer to wins over teams that "were ranked _____ at the time." FSU beat top 10 ranked ND... oh boy. A&M blew out top 10 ranked South Carolina... BFD. I really wish they'd stop posting those rankings next to results. Garbage rankings shouldn't influence anything, but it seems to continue to creep into the discussion.
They should be modified to show current ranking.

Or at least post the current ranking next to the "then" ranking. I'm just amazed how often previous rankings get mentioned and I'd say the primary reason is because analysts see them on the results listings when they look at them.
If anything playing an overrated team with a high ranking helps you. Coaches are going to harp on and have that as a rallying point for the team when they have the 'number 4' team next up.

Yes, while that statement is absolutely true, MSU may or may not have been the 8th best team in the country on that day or now. I don’t think that a team’s ranking on a given day is all that informative until the season plays out. Those rankings are a bit more useful later in the year. However, I see the talking heads refer to the “at the time” ranking too much for my taste. It’s a very lazy analysis that is overvalued. Just one of my personal pet peeves. It’s easy to look at a team’s results page and say they defeated “x” number of ranked teams or Team X that was ranked x at the time. Team X may have been overrated hot garbage or may be a legit team. To say, for example, TCU beat #4 Oklahoma on Oct. 4 is not all that meaningful now. I think that the fact these rankings continue to appear on team’s results pages causes them to have an overweighed influence on how teams are evaluated IMHO, I could be wrong.

I agree with you to an extent, but either way is problematic. For example, a highly ranked team could be playing lights out and then lose key contributors to season ending injury, etc, go into a tailspin, and not play at the same level later in the season.

Pre-season rankings are a crap-shoot. Oklahoma seemed legit at the end of last year, especially after stomping Alabama in the Sugar Bowl...

There's a lot of lazy thinkers that believe OU "seems legit" at the beginning of every season. Problem is, they actually have to go play the games, where they've underachieved (relative to their preseason ranking) just about every season since Heupel won them a NC. I wonder when those people will catch on...

Yup. And I think with kids in college ball, that can happen a lot. Sometimes they lose a tough game and they simply aren't the same team afterwards.

So, if they have a very good season the year before they shouldn't been given a high ranking they next year because you think they have a history of underachieving? Oklahoma finished 11-2 with a stomping of Alabama, finished 6th in both polls, and had most starters returning. I'd say that would validate them being given high ranking in the pre-season polls...

IF: MSST, ORE, FSU, BAMA all win out, we wont make the playoffs even if we beat WISC by 50pts.
(Florida might beat FSU)
(Auburn/Georgia might beat BAMA)
(Ole Miss might beat MSST)
(UCLA might beat ORE (*conf championship))
I'm not worried about Baylor/TCU we would jump them after beating Top15 WISC.

Chances are one of those top 4 teams will lose. Buckeyes just need to win out.

I would already rank MSST below Ohio St. They have been an SEC doormat for years.
They looked like garbage against BAMA and all their "high profile" wins (the reason they skyrocketed up in rankings)......all LOST.
Mississippi State has literally beaten NO GOOD TEAM. (Auburn meh, they just lost two in a row)
Not to mention their OOC schedule is garbage. The same week OSU lost to Va.Tech, MSST was playing UAB.
UAB has 2 wins last year and 3 wins the year before that...oh UAB did drop 34pts on the mighty MSST

Lets not keep giving MSST credit for 3 Top10 wins.
When 2 of those 3 are no longer ranked and have 4 losses, while the third is not even in the Top15 anymore with 3 losses.

MSST should be ranked #7 at best. Behind Alabama, Oregon, FSU, TCU, Baylor and Ohio St.

I disagree pretty strongly. I doubt very highly that 2 SEC teams make the final 4 if we win out.

Huh? Where is anyone saying that? No one has Oklahoma ranked...

Context... seems lost on some people.
The entire conversation is about people rating teams based on where they were ranked weeks ago. Being the first of 3 teams to beat Oklahoma thus far is not an accomplishment.

At this point I think all 1-loss teams from the SEC are going. The poll will come out in a few hours... and I fully expect Miss St. to be 5, and quite possibly Alabama 1. Hope I'm wrong though. If/when Miss St. beats Ole Miss w/o Treadwell, they'll jump over TCU.

I was referencing justifying ranking Oklahoma high in the beginning of the season based upon what they did last year and who they had returning. I do agree that now that we know what we know about Oklahoma, teams should no longer be getting the credit for Oklahoma they were getting earlier...same with Mississippi State getting credit for "beating 3 top-10 teams" when two of those "top-10" teams are squat right now.
