2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

Who have we played that's worth mentioning?

Who have we played that's better than Boise State, Texas A&M, LSU, Bama, or Auburn.

And I'm not saying that Boise State or Texas A&M are top 25 teams...but they are better than Maryland (who I assume is our best opponent).

Cincinnati and Virginia Tech are a combined 9-8. That's not our fault they suck, but those were supposed to be our strong OOC games. Add to that that Navy has been subpar and Kent State is God awful...then what do we hang our hat on?

Look..we've blown out a lot of teams, and I think that is what gives us a sense that this team is better than #14. I think we are...I think we are really freaking good. But up to this point, we haven't played anybody to prove it. Win the next five games, and that story changes. But right now, Ole Miss has a better resumè.

I don't think the rankings should reflect who a committee thinks are the four best teams...but instead the four teams that did the most on the field. Hard to do...hard to differentiate...but that's what I would rather see. Every other sports playoff does that. It's not who is the best at the end who makes it. It is who has played the best.

Boise State and A&M are throughly mediocore at the level of Rutgers or Maryland. LSU is decent but still needed a mighty comeback to win against Wisconsin who had no QB at the time and doesn't look to be massively inproving in that department anytime soon. Bama is a need more data as the only team they've played and beat is a 3 loss WVU team and Auburn looks good but not unbeatable much like Sparty. Which means we'll know a lot more in the next week. However the SEC this is year is pretty much a self perpetuating myth. There is very little backing behind why they are all rated so high butthey get tons of credit for beating each other becuase of it. I see a bunch not that says a lot this year becuase ost of the top 15 feel like the would belong in the 10-20 range when compaired to some of the teams of past years.

Between them all they have close wins over:
KState, which is probably top-10 or 15 in December
Wiscy, which probably belongs in the top-25 but likely won't be there after Nebraska
WVU, which doesn't belong in the top-25
Clemson, which is a big unknown but another fringe 25 like Wiscy... and will likely stick around given their schedule

As a whole it's better than anything this conference has done ... but these games aren't what drove their current ranks -- that came from the myths of TAMU and SCe being propped up as top-10s.

Navy almost beat Notre Dame...

True, but doesn't everyone almost beat Notre Dame? Navy lost to W. Kentucky. They haven't been bad this year...but they haven't been good either.

Quote me the post where I say anything of the sort.
Why change the subject?

You initially were complaining about Mississippi being ranked ahead of Ohio State. I explained it wasn't unexpected because Mississippi had played five teams who are better than anyone we played. You came back saying Mississippi had only played three meaningful teams. I was responding to show how much stronger their schedule has been, which is on subject.

I'm surprised some out there think Texas A&M and Boise State are worse than Rutgers and Maryland. Even if they are equal, which they aren't, then their 4th and 5th toughest games are equal to our first and second.

In the end, it just isn't surprising to see a two loss team with a schedule like Mississippi's ahead of a one loss team with a schedule like Ohio State's.

I think another thing that's hurting us is that 35-21 doesn't illustrate that we were 40 yards away from tying the game with a minute left. The one thing that the playoff rankings don't show is how close they consider these teams. They may just see them all as relative toss ups right now, but they have to rank somebody higher.

That's probably the most frustrating part of this charade to me: literally every other team with a loss has some part of the national punditry willing to put that loss into context --
Oh, but MSU played Oregon close at the half! -- but our very early, fluky, closer-than-the-score loss doesn't get any such explanation.

I mean, even if there was an explanation... there's a mile between a close loss to VT and a close loss to Oregon.

It wasn't really a close loss to VT either.

You have a seriously warped perception of that game then. OSU was tied in the 4th Qtr and down 7 with 59 seconds left before throwing a long pick six to seal the game. Yes the first half was ugly but the second half was was all OSU till VT's answering drive after we tied the game. I don't know what you could call that other then a close game.
