2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

There are 6 games this week with top 20 teams facing off against each other. These rankings really don't mean jack right now.
I tend towards disagreement. SEC bias or no SEC bias, you have to play and beat someone ranked to move up. The chance that beating Sparty and shooting to #4 - or that beating OSU will move Sparty to #4 - could happen is akin to believing that Jerry World is a neutral site for Big Ten teams or that home field advantage is a myth. Michigan and PSU in full suckitude doesn't ease matters either.

Five teams? Now that is a joke.
They're 1-2 against teams worth mentioning, and while their 1 win is decent... so far 'Bama is riding high based on reputation alone.

To me this is the most galling situation. Their best win is home against 3-loss WVU. Their ranking is based purely on perceived, not demonstrated strength. As I have already posted, I expect LSU to jump Ohio State if the Tigers win regardless of what the Buckeyes do.

Thank god we have folks like Osborne and Alvarez keeping the process honest and objective.

Still below a 2 loss Ole Piss team what a joke....

fuck Ole Piss!

I knew we wouldn't catch them in the polls, but dammit man!
we got the same record, both lost to Auburn (ours was more lopsided).
and we beat those assholes.

we beat them with an offense that didn't even really try to look balanced, or pretend to have the ability to pass the ball.
our defense made them look completely inept and brought Bad Bo back out of the closet.

Auburn should feel embarrassed that they let Ole Piss hang 30 on them, and then needed a fluke injury-fumble to save the day 6 inches from the goalline.

A bad precedent is being made here for the SEC. Losing 2 games has too harsh of a penalty if it's vs top teams in the SEC:

so being penalized for losing is something new?
so THAT'S why we're not in the top 4! we lost too many games.
who knew?

To be fair, Auburn's D suffers from a lot of the same problems Ohio State's does, prone to getting beat on deep routes and short outs.

As a matter of fact, Auburn's offense is a lot like Ohio States as well. On papers these two teams are pretty similar.

Who have we played that's worth mentioning?

Who have we played that's better than Boise State, Texas A&M, LSU, Bama, or Auburn.

And I'm not saying that Boise State or Texas A&M are top 25 teams...but they are better than Maryland (who I assume is our best opponent).

Cincinnati and Virginia Tech are a combined 9-8. That's not our fault they suck, but those were supposed to be our strong OOC games. Add to that that Navy has been subpar and Kent State is God awful...then what do we hang our hat on?

Look..we've blown out a lot of teams, and I think that is what gives us a sense that this team is better than #14. I think we are...I think we are really freaking good. But up to this point, we haven't played anybody to prove it. Win the next five games, and that story changes. But right now, Ole Miss has a better resumè.

I don't think the rankings should reflect who a committee thinks are the four best teams...but instead the four teams that did the most on the field. Hard to do...hard to differentiate...but that's what I would rather see. Every other sports playoff does that. It's not who is the best at the end who makes it. It is who has played the best.
