2014 Offense Discussion

I have seen some of Urb's comments that the offense is designed to work against a base 4-3 defense and we haven't seen one of those yet.

So the offense works against a team that never leaves its base? Boy, no wonder Urby tore us open in 06.
That still wouldn't explain many of the glaring issues when we played Sparty. Obviously, MSU does have more athletic linebackers than one would expect of your "traditional" 43.
However the differences in scheme and opposing looks in college aren't hard to tweak with the same personnel. Which in itself, is highly concerning for our offense.

Hell, Heacocks defenses would show you anything from a 33, 43 to a 34 by switching out 2 players at most.

In my mind, I think this coaching staff (or Herman at least) freezes up when presented with that double eagle look.

I need to see some wicked fcuking execution tomorrow. I need to see the offense that I've read that we have but have never seen. I need to see us score three in the first. I need to see the ball spread around and plenty of YAC. I need to see some pass protection and some run blocking. AND I need to see that we look like we know what the fcuk we're doing not just because we're playing Kent State but because we do actually know what the fcuk we're doing. I'd like to see a sequence of plays that appear to have some sort of rationale and continuity rather than being sent in by a monkey who's just drawing them out of a hat. I'd like to see us dominate through intellect and execution not just physicality. Of course we should be able to push Kent around. I don't want to see that tomorrow. If we have to resort to the bulldozer approach, it's not a good win.

I saw exactly what I'd hoped for yesterday and it was executed to a degree that made me willing to believe that we can do it against teams other than Kent State. Earlier, I'd thought it was absurd to have a bye week three games in but now I think it's exactly what we need. We have an extra week to work on what went wrong against VT and what went right against KSU before the Catbears show up. That game will really let us know where we are for the rest of the year. I'm more than encouraged, though.

Just so we have proof that it happened

This was the first game I can remember (since maybe the Nebraska nighttime wood-shedding and Kent State doesn't count) where it didn't seem like we were struggling with what play to call. I have felt like we've suffered from the Cheesecake Factory menu conundrum . The up-tempo seems good for JT and Herman other than the false starts. We were able to string plays together in fairly elegant and productive fashion; what my first grade teacher termed "not just calling words" when reading aloud.

I was disappointed that we left some points on the field. Make the FG we missed and kick two more close ones instead of going for it on 4th and we're at 61. Yes, it worked out fine but I don't think we'll always be able to walk away from points like that.

The offense has to get better. The defense is catching up. tOSU is #18 in total defense, #15 in total offense. Urb said in his on-field post game interview that tOSU was not playing championship defense. He might be soon living in a glass house, so he might not want to throw rocks.

He's speaking the truth, he's been saying that for over a year now. He knows it, the players know it, the coaches know it, the fans know it. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is. We'll just have to wait and see how the defense continues to respond.
