2014 Bowl Games Open Thread

Let me get this straight...this is the supposed #9 team in the country? With three losses coming in? Oh, right...SEC. Guess they just didn't want to be there.
SEC West was way overrated all year. Nearly every team in that division has some ugly losses that don't shouldn't happen to good teams. Really makes you wonder just how good Bama is seeing how they struggled mightily with the majority of the SEC West.

So you enjoy seeing the Buckeyes play at a disadvantage? Look, I get that if what you are seeking is a holiday vacation and that the bowl game is just one part of it. If the Bucks had finished outside the four slot this argument would bear more weight.

But that's not the case. Ohio State is headed into a potential NC game and has to play an SEC team at an SEC city in the SEC Region. So let's look at some other stats:

Division I-A Conferences Big Ten Against:

Win Loss Tie Pct. PF PA Delta
American Athletic Conference

224 78 11 0.73323 8481 4708 3773
Atlantic Coast Conference

678 634 36 0.51632 26956 25689 1267

Big 12 Conference

639 299 25 0.67653 22607 13875 8732

Pacific-12 Conference

393 346 19 0.53100 16323 15051 1272

Southeastern Conference

316 261 20 0.54606 12152 10084 2068

Amazing what happens when we begin talking about how the Big Ten has played historically against the other Big Boys in non-bowl situations.

Now look at the Buckeye's bowl record - 19 - 24 - 0
If not for location, how does a team from a strong conference, a team that wins at a .720 pace overall, suddenly drop to .441, well below the .500 pace one might anticipate given that bowl games usually match teams of comparable skill?
If we are playing games at home, as Kuji suggests, then that's cool. But I have no interest whatsoever in neutral site cold weather games. Most of the country including myself think that totally sucks. It's a shitty experience for most fans. But if teams are getting actual home games, that's cool.

The truth is the SEC has had some dominant conference champions. The myth is the entire conference are a bunch of powerhouses.
Yep, just follow the polls all year. SEC West teams made huge leaps, and small falls based on beating/losing to each other. I think at one point or another, every team in that division was ranked in the Top-10, when in reality, only Bammer and probably Miss State deserved it. The others probably shouldn't even be in the discussion for top-25 teams nationally...and it's showing in bowl season.

Bama won't be so easy...but, geez, take away one drive and Mississippi have just 52 yards total offense. Pop Bama in the nose early and their confidence may be shattered too, especially if Wisky rolls.

Surprisingly enough there are indoor facilities in the north. Why couldn't a game be played at Lucas Oil or Ford Field?

... and I'm surprised at how many people show no regard to for how good TCU is on defense. This is a very very good team and I for one am glad we are not playing them because right now Boykins is really doing a nice job.

Baylor put up 61 against TCU. And TCU squeaked by OK 37-33, WV 31-30 and KS 34-30. btw, watched the WV game and TCU was very lucky to win even after WV went into a shell to protect the lead. hmm, sort of like OSU against Penn State.

Not watching the game, but obviously MS didn't show up and TCU has a chip on its shoulder, go figure.

Hopefully Ohio State will have as big a chip on its shoulder tomorrow night.

Oh yea, how 'bout that SEC!

>

Also, TCU opens up against Minnesota next year and finishes w/Baylor the week before the Conference Championship games. Of course, always subject to change, eh.

carry on

Edit: 2016 TCU opens up against South Dakota State Jackrabbits ?!? Hopefully, TCU does well!

Teams should not get home games given the seedings are based on human voters, hardly an objective measure of clear superiority. They should be neutral site games, and the reality is they will not be played in cold weather venues.

Again, the college football post season only came about because it was seen as an opportunity for northern fans to vacation in warmer venues, and see their team play a football game. Playoff or not, that concept isn't going to change. The cities that have been hosting these games are not going to give them up without a fight, and they'll grease whoever's palms they need to grease if it comes to that. For some of them, that bowl game is a material chunk of their annual tourism revenue.
