2014-2015 B1G Men's Basketball

Sparty looked really bad the last two games out--Michigan (who is terrible when healthy, and atrocious now that they're not) took them to OT, and Illinois beat them today with three of their top players out. And both games were in East Lansing. Izzo may have lost this team.
I do not think that Izzo has lost the team. I just think that the team is not very good this year. It just goes to show that even the great Tom Izzo cannot win games when he does not have a roster with a lot of good players.

Agree to disagree here, I guess--Trice, Dawson and Valentine have a ton of experience, and they've been key players for several years now (in other words, they aren't guys who are just now getting to play because there finally is not someone better in front of them). No way should they be losing to a depleted Illinois team at home, and almost losing to a depleted Michigan team at home.

Fran McCaffery...generally a fan of his passion and his coaching at Iowa. Did not handle this right. Dick move.

Q. What did you hear from the officials regarding Adam touching the eye or whatever it was?

FRAN McCAFFERY: They said he poked him in the eye.

Q. Is it a flagrant now if you poke a guy in the eye? I’m just curious. I thought maybe that explained that.

FRAN McCAFFERY: You know, don’t misconstrue it. That’s an excellent crew. But on that one, I don’t know.

Q. That’s three times he’s got somebody in the eye. How does this keep happening?

FRAN McCAFFERY: Next question. Ask an intelligent question.

Q. Why is that not an intelligent question?

FRAN McCAFFERY: Because I said so.

I really do not understand all the love for Indiana because they are not very good when they are away from Bloomington and I do not think that there are any NCAA games that are going to be played in Assembly Hall.

Dean Smith (1931-2015)

I realize that Dean Smith never coached in the Big Ten but I am sure that he influenced many of the coaches that coached and are coaching in the Big Ten today. This would not be a Basketball Forum without at least a mention of his death. He was not only a great basketball coach but also a great person. I still can remember Phil Ford running that 4 corner offense.

RIP Dean and my sympathy goes out to your immediate family and everyone else that your life affected.

What's interesting to me is seeing the videos of these events, how directly his hand goes to their eyes. There's no hesitation, or wobble, or anything that makes it look less than deliberate. If he isn't consciously intending to gouge them, then all I can think is the same rule a motorcyclist told me about potholes on the road--if you let yourself stare at the hole, you're going to end up driving right into it. So, maybe the guy is somehow locking onto his opponent's eyes, thinking "don't poke" and then his hand just follows. That, or he's just a dick.

Damn, it is going to take the perfect game to beat UK this year. I've been able to watch them a little more this last month.

That much talent and depth...even if one guy is having a bad night, someone else just goes in and takes over. Calipari has that team locked in and controlled. Pushes and pulls all the right buttons. I don't know how you stop that.

Absolutely pathetic how poor LSU played down the stretch. LSU, up a few scores, kept taking awful shots and trying to throw baseline, cross-court passes with about 25 seconds left on the shot clock like it was going out of style.
