Michigan's Gardner can hit WR with eyes closed

Wolverines fans will be happy to know that, even in the offseason, Devin Gardner doesn't lack for confidence. Now Michigan's starting quarterback, he and the receivers are putting in individual work the rest of the spring and summer to refine their timing. On Wednesday, Gardner pulled back the curtain for a peek at his connection with senior Jeremy Gallon. He demonstrated in a short video clip that he tweeted that he can hit Gallon with his eyes closed. Gardner opens the video by saying what's coming: "Eyes closed, square out." On a four- to five-step dropback, he throws 10 yards to the right side, then asks the cameraman, "He got it?" ... Gallon enters the frame and says, "Hands don't lie." Gardner is in his first off-season as the starter, and his teammates said repeatedly during the spring that he has showed more leadership skills.

Which is slightly easier to believe than their last quarterback's claim, i.e. he is faster than Usain Bolt.

Someone better tell Gardner that he might want to keep his eyes open. Otherwise he might end up like his heir did in the UA game:

The taller they are, the further they fall:

The Wolverines' strategy when it comes to recruiting receivers these days could be summed up in three words: super size me. On Thursday, Detroit wideout Maurice Ways became the latest player to commit to Brady Hoke. Ways is 6-foot-3.

He joins current Class of 2014 commits Drake Harris, a 6-foot-4 receiver, and Ian Bunting, a tight end who's been listed as tall as 6-foot-7. Meanwhile, Michigan's celebrated 2013 class included three skyscraper receivers: 6-foot-4 Jaron Dukes, 6-foot-3 Csont'e York and 6-foot-2 Da'Mario Jones. They'll join current redshirt freshman Jehu Chesson (6-foot-3) and sophomore Amara Darboh (6-2) in Ann Arbor.

There's no secret to what's going on here. Michigan is moving on from its spread offense days and diving full bore back into the pro style system. Offensive coordinator Al Borges wants rangy, lanky athletes on the outside, both for the mismatches they create and their ability to block for the running game.

Jackasses. :shake:

Nothing exudes confidence like bragging about worthless, unremarkable accomplishments on the Internet.

It's noteworthy how quickly the team is taking on the "stuttering sweaty idiot" personality of their head coach.

Hey- wasn't there this HS phenom who could do a flip over his teamate? That skill translated well...

Scout got a few prospects together for some pictures; two of them were OSU commit JB Shugarts and Sam McGuffie. Shugarts entered a two-point stance. McGuffie jumped over him. And did a flip just because.

How does he do when he's flat on his back with 500 lbs on top of him?

I'd guess about as well a Vincent Smith did with Clowney on him:

Recruiting: Big-play threat Maurice Ways latest example Michigan is valuing size over speed at WR
By Kyle Meinke | [email protected]
May 02, 2013

ANN ARBOR -- Maurice Ways last week became the seventh receiver to commit to Brady Hoke at Michigan.

And, at 6-foot-4, the Detroit Country Day standout continues Michigan's run on rangy, big-play targets at the position.

All seven receiver commits/signees under Hoke have stood at least 6-2, helping the Wolverines outfit their new pro-style offense with guys who can stretch the field vertically.

"(Receivers coach Jeff Hecklinski) said Jeremy Gallon and Drew Dileo, they're both a hell of a receiver, but he said they're moving on from the spread offense when coach (Rich) Rodriguez was there," Ways said. "Now they're changing things up. They want guys who can stretch the field, be deep-ball threats, and physical guys who can block for the running backs.

"He said they're going back to the Lloyd Carr era. Going back to Michigan football. Defense first, pound the ball with the running game, then stretch the field with the receivers. And that's what I do. I can catch the deep balls and the go routes and things like that. That's what I love to do."

Michigan recruited 10 receivers during the Rodriguez era, only three of whom were at least 6-foot-2. Three weren't even 5-11.

The Wolverines' leading receiver last year was 5-foot-8 Jeremy Gallon, and he figures to be joined in the starting lineup by 5-foot-10 Drew Dileo next year. Gallon is a terrific receiver, Dileo is sure-handed and both have terrific speed.

But Michigan clearly has shifted to placing a premium on size with its wideouts, hoping to create mismatches downfield that can be exploited with a big-armed quarterback and pro-style offense.

"Speed is overrated," Hecklinski said in February of the Wolverines' recruiting strategy. "Obviously, it's something we have to have. But speed is overrated. How can you truly judge the speed of a high school kid on the perimeter when maybe he touches the ball three times a game?

Lets see here....

3-4 losses last year? Check
Loss to OSU? Check
Fans griping about the predictable boring ass offense? Check
Embarrassing Bowl loss in which said offense and overall lack of athleticism are exposed? Check

If that isn't Lloyd era scUM football I don't know what is.
