I've been wondering what the pre-snap alignments and shifts will be like this year. Last year, we had that weird process of the RB lining up in pistol before motioning to either side of the QB. I'd love to see us stay in the pistol to avoid tipping our hand.

Also, when Jordan Hall went out last year, Philly got a decent amount of carries after motioning into the backfield. I wonder if that will continue with new personnel, allowing Philly to be more of a receiving threat. I love what we're hearing from Dontre Wilson and I hope he can be a guy that lines up in the slot/backfield to take carries and short passes.

Sounds like a healthy Hall could be fighting for reps with Wilson. And any of Marshall, Clark and Corey Smith could be fighting Philly and the other returning receivers for a spot in the rotation.

I go back a long way and I can recall a class or two with this many new kids ready to make an impact - but never on a team that was already stacked.

Exactly what I was thinking. You know Devin and Philly will be our go to guys, but there are so many players that are solid behind them that the '13 class will be pushing at the skill positions. I think the starting 5 are pretty good in Philly, Devin, Spencer, Thomas, and Fields (who UFM said earned a starting spot and looked great in the spring game). Then again, I think Wilson and Marshall are too good to keep off the field and bring different skill sets. We have threats vertically and in the intermediate game with Devin and Philly, with Thomas as more of a go up and get it guy, but Wilson and Marshall give us a homerun threat in the short game, which we don't have. You can get it to those guys on bubble screens, quick slants, zone read, speed option, etc. and the defense must hold their breath. Philly was serviceable in that role last year but he didn't quite bring that to the table...plus this gives him time to work on becoming a complete pure receiver.

Clark will also make noise but I think he will take over Philly's outside spot when he departs, so I'm not sure how much he plays this year aside from possibly returning kicks. Then you have Elliott, who likely won't get much time at the traditional RB spot but might get utilized here and there. I think basically the new guys won't line up much at the traditional spots, but will be used in the slot primarily (Wilson, Marshall, and Elliott) with an occasional handoff. I think Hall and Fields are the players who stands to lose the most PT with the more the new guys play...not saying they won't start or play alot (I think Hall will do big things for us this year), just saying those guys will cut into their time some I would think. Either way, great problem to have especially when considering we had the opposite problem at this time last year.

It also should be mentioned that the TEs will have another year in the offensive system and should be even more productive. Heurman and vannett will provide very good short and intermediate targets in the passing game to cause mismatches and move the chains.

A lot of the issues on offense last year, I feel, resulted in overthrown passes by Miller and drops by the WRs. Miller took a big leap forward on overthrowing from his freshman year (2011 Michigan game...soooo damn close!) to now. Our WR corp was very young last year, pretty mediocre and took big steps by the end of the season and raw skill made up for the inexperience they had. The whole passing game just felt sloppy all season. I think this year the playbook is going to expand, things are going to gel in the passing game and we're going to see us absolutely lighting teams up on the scoreboard. We have weapons all over the field, especially in the backfield.

Overall, this year is the year the offense carries the team. Next year we'll love 4 guys on the OL, and that's when I'll be worried about the offense. My only real concern is Braxton's durability, and if that happens I still think we could come out on top of the conference with Guiton leading the team.

This is the most excited I've been for a Buckeye offense since 2008 (Pryor, Wells, Hartline, Robiskie, Stoneburner, Sanzenbacher, Posey). But I think this year's team could top them, simply based on scheme.

Agreed. Those receivers had to make plays in spite of the scheme (TP running around and heaving it down field every now and then).

Hope to hear some positive news about Corey Smith soon. I can't imagine him coming here under limited schollies as a JUCO guy if the staff didn't have plans for him to contribute this year.

I believe he and Thomas were running with the 2's last I heard, nothing too positive/negative but it's still early and as the season goes on his experience may kick in.

Maybe my glasses are a little too rose colored, but I don't believe I would trade any position group on this team (Receiver, QB or RB) for any of those in 2008. I would kill to have Beanie back - but we had nothing like the RB depth we have now.

And yes, I am expecting tremendous strides from our receivers to make that statement.

Agreed, I really like what we have with this team, I've always been a TP fan, but miller may be even more dynamic than him. Only difference is, I never had to hold my breath for TP like I do for Braxton because Pryor made defensive players pay for trying to tackle him because he was so big. Other than that, IMO, our WRs seem to be more talented as do our RB corp as a whole. Beenie was a monster, but an injury to him and we were screwed, we go a legit 4-5deep this year with quality, and all our guys could provide meaningful minutes. Our offense will definitely lead the team this season, and I in no way think that's a bad thing in our conference. The problem will lie when/if we face an sec team in the NC.

Just as an aside, you'll always see lots of motion in a Meyer offense. At a bare minimum, it nearly always tips the hand of the defense as to whether they're in zone or man.
