2013-2014 B1G Men's Basketball

Anyone have any thoughts on the more aggressive hand check foul rules this year?

I really hope it doesn't hinder defense in the B1G. More so, I'm worried a bit that other conferences will be more aggressive implementing the rules than the B1G will be. That could be problematic come tourney time.

You can call me concerned especially when it comes to Scott and Craft. They play defense with a lot of intensity and depending upon the officiating crew they are going to have to adjust almost every game. You just do not know what the officials are going to call.

Watching the Walsh game last night, we had something like five personals in the first four minutes. B1G basketball is supposed to be a defensive grind. It's almost as if the NCAA wants to discourage our style of play.

Yup.. There are going to be some long games this season with a lot of free throws. Maybe the NCAA wants to turn B1G basketball into Baylor football. Guys are going to have to adjust every game… Extremely disappointing

Yeah they're gonna do their best to ruin the best college ball in the country. Hopefully the B1G refs will pay attention to the other conferences and call the games as close as they can to how everyone else is calling games so our starting five doesn't foul out in the first half of the first tourney game against a 15 seed.

I'm really pleased with the new hand-check rules. Looking forward to seeing more scoring and more fluidity in the game. Some college games (are you listening, John Thompson III?) have become unwatchable sludgefests.

Honestly, I don't think there's a problem forcing the Big Ten to change the way they officiate games. You know, one of the reasons the Big Ten had been the 5th best league (now you could say 4th since the Big East has split) in the country in terms of recruiting top-50 basketball prospects over the past 15 years is because of the slow pace which is aided by the physical defense that is partially a result of the officiating. Many of the top recruits went to the ACC to play because they could get up and down, and the Big Ten has been far behind them as well as the SEC in recruiting top-50 players partly due to the style of play in the Big Ten being less attractive.

Also, I think the Big Ten officiating hurt some B1G teams in terms of being prepared to play in the NCAA tournament because they often call the game differently (i.e., allow a lot less physical defense). You saw last year UM was not a physical defense, which made them look soft in the Big Ten, but the way the game is called in the NCAA tourney most of the time, they were prepared for that because they had not changed the way they played defense to adjust to the permissive Big Ten refs.

Well considering the B1G has been one of the top, if not the top hoops conference for five years if not more, it would seem top 50 players are not all that important.

I love B1G bball the way it is. Tough. Physical. The schedule is a grind. And while the tourney is fun, I'm of the opinion it means jack shit when determining who the best team is. I'd rather it stayed the way it has been.

That being said, I'm sure the good coaches will teach their teams how to adjust. But the more the NCAA looks like the NBA, the less I'll watch.

And this is why the Ohio State Buckeyes, coached by Thad Matta, will have no problem with the new rules.
No doubt. I've just always been a fan of hard nosed hustle and good defense, and not just in basketball but football as well. Any changes that make it harder for the defense or easier for the offense tend to be based on catering to the casual fan. And when the rules change to attract more casual fans, it usually means I enjoy the sport a little less. I know it's a business and offense sells tickets. I'd just rather they left well enough alone. Pumpkin pumpkiners.

You know the Big Ten hasn't won a hoops title since 2000, and only one since 1989 - that means something, it means the top teams in the Big Ten are, when you get down to where the rubber meets the road, rarely as good as the top team in the country. If it were one year or a few years, maybe you could ignore it, but obviously there is a pattern of Big Ten inferiority when it comes to having truly the best teams in college basketball. And you're out to lunch if you think the tournament is meaningless in terms of showing who the best team or teams are. Clearly the number of NBA alumni from Big Ten schools is also far fewer than the other top leagues. If the league wasn't cast as a slow, physical basketball league then perhaps recruiting would have been better and maybe the Big Ten might win one of those things more than once in a blue moon. But that is just one of the problems the Big Ten has been faced with. Obviously, when the Anthony Davises of the world get paid off to go to UK, there are other issues involved in why the Big Ten is not getting as many top talents, but still I think there are a lot of top prospects that get turned off from the Big Ten purely because they don't like the brand of basketball that you prefer. I don't mind the change one bit considering the potential boost it could bring in recruiting.
