Yeah, it's funny that OSU is kind of moving into Bo Ryan/Wiscy level consistency, but instead of just top-4 Big Ten teams he's got Sweet 16 teams every year. Every year rival fans don't pick OSU to win the league or be particularly good, and both last year and this year there have been some national media members pretty vocal in doubting OSU. But Matta really has this thing humming. The talent the past couple years doesn't seem particularly good compared to what the top teams in college basketball have, but he's got OSU right up there anyway. All the people who thought Matta had success just because he recruited well were wrong all along, as he's been able to field a few top-10 teams (2006, 2013 and now 2014) without a surefire future NBA player on the roster.

Yeah he's a way better coach than he got credit for. You have to believe that the longer he stays, the more likely a NC becomes.

I do not think any of us really appreciate how good this team really is right now. I know it is very very early but this team takes so much pride in their defense and it looks like they are very unselfish on offense. I think these guys really have bought it to Matta's system. They are just and enjoy to watch and it will be interesting to see how they fare in the next few months.

I agree but I am one questioning just how good this team is. I don't really think some of the teams we are playing are a good thing for our guys right now. NDST is underrated but Delaware and Bryant? Yuk.
I'm not saying we need an ACC challenge every week but I hope our boys are staying completely focused because shit is about to get real when conference play starts.

Not defending the Bryant and Delaware games, but Marquette and Maryland were both good tests for this team as was NDST.
But I am with you - there's really no way this is truly the 2nd/3rd best team in the nation right now unless the game has changed to where their defensive game is too strong for the offenses.

I am not saying the average fan should've known better, but the media who watches the recruits - and believe me, there are MANY national media types that hit the summer circuit hard - should have known better and been vocal about not ranking them #1 in the preseason. Julius Randle has a VERY limited offensive skillset for a guy who was supposed to dominate from Day 1, scouts should have picked up on that. The Harrison twins have been criticized for bad body language all year long and not being good leaders, that is something the media that is supposed to be insightful should have been talking about. It is a disgrace that the media allowed this KY team to be the first ever to go from the NIT to preseason #1.

At this point in the season, there's not much reason to believe OSU isn't a top-3 team. Now, will some other very good teams improve more as the season wears on and perhaps pass OSU later in the year? That is almost certain to be the case. But they are every bit as deserving of being top-3 as anybody out there right now. There are only 14 unbeaten teams left and KY, Duke, UNC and KU teams that were supposed to dominate all have multiple losses and have struggled a lot more than people expected.

I still expect all four of those teams to make a lot of noise in March and April. But they all have a lot more growing and gelling to do than the Buckeyes, who have terrific upperclass leadership depth that, frankly, isn't present on those other teams. And they all have some flaws, as does Sparty.
Michigan State is a bit of a cipher so far to me. Perhaps it's just a matter of Keith Appling never quite becoming as reliable as I figured he would. Nix was a huge loss.
Duke has mucho talent, but if they don't learn to play some D it could be an early out in the Dance. For as good as Jabari Parker is on offense, he couldn't stop my grandmother from driving the lane in her wheelchair.
Calipari is a fabulous coach (I know most people here don't agree with me, but he really is) who will likely have the 'Cats playing very strong through their SEC schedule (though the SEC looks even weaker this year than usual). The idea that Randle is offensively challenged doesn't seem consistent with his 17.2-ppg average and 52% from the field, and he's an absolute terror on the boards. But I think Cauley-Stein and the Harrisons need to grow up.

At this point, it's a silly debate in a sport where rankings are meaningless.
September Heisman = December Naismith? Anyway, most of those other teams have far higher ceilings. Ohio State is basically at their ceiling as a team right now.
