2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I never said anything about sure things and those guys are the exception to the rule. Then OSU had room to miss on guys like that especially when they ran a more pro-style offense. Now with the spread and less schollies they will have to be careful with throwing a bone to kids.

My point was that you're assuming these guys are having a bone thrown to them and that they can't perform at the level expected at a big D-1 school like OSU, and, further, that you can't be sure of this until they actually get on the field and perform. Our past staff didn't throw bones to recruits that they didn't think could perform at tOSU. They offered scholarships to players they thought could contribute. Sometimes they were wrong, but more often they were right. I trust their track record.

Well there are times when some kids from home states get scholarship offers when other programs on their level nationally haven't showed much interest. Staffs see that they worked hard in the summer and give them an offer or their parents were players at the school and they feel obligated to give offers. It happens. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't.

Now that you mention it...if I was Jim Tressel, I NEVER would've offered that Sanzenwhateverhisnameis kid. I heard they were being facetious when they offered Nathan Williams, as well. They just decided not to be mean and let him stay.

Yes Sanzenbacher would be an example of a guy that panned out. I'm not saying it's good or bad, I am just saying it happens and if OSU does it while on limited schollies they can't afford to miss on people. Nate Williams was offered by Cal, Georgia, Michigan State, Oklahoma, West V. and Wisconsin. He would not count.

He could technically not honor those verbals but that won't happen. He'll find a way go squeeze in about 21 or 22 players in this class and make the numbers work.

As for Epitropolous, I think there's a good chance he ends up being a punter here.?.

I see Epi as a safety and possibly punter.

Couple of idle speculations on the subject(s) presented. First, no less a fantastic recruiter than John (Coop) Cooper said something to the effect of "if you offer a kid that doesn't pan out, you have to watch him every day in practice. If you miss on a kid, you only have to see him once a year." Coop was a great recruiter, so 'throwing a bone' to a kid isn't probably what is done. Maybe in grad school or law school (legacies), but not in the 'Bigs". Too big a business. With ONLY 85 schollies, you have to be careful to make sure that the kid can perform on that level. (If not sure, offer a 'preferred walk-on'). Too much (head coach at $4 million +) salaries rides on making good decisions. Do they miss? Certainly. Does the sleeper become a starter? Sometimes, or better (Sanzo). For every one sleeper that becomes all B10, there are 5 'can't miss' kids that DO miss. (Just made up that number, but I'm sure it's close to being dead on).

Now for the bad news regarding our Ohio boys that were signed. Remember your history, and go to the SEC thread in recruiting. Many of the SEC coaches have taken over and 'withdrawn' schollies to those that are't THEIR program players. Not sure that Urban is that kind of guy, but if he does rescind, then I (we?) will know that he's in this for a short time, and not planning on making OSU his final stop. Looking for the gold quickly, but not planning on a long term future here. If he keeps what we've got committed, then I'll be convinced that he's going to be around for more than just a couple years and one or two NC titles , before he begs out/off. I agree, I'd rather have a C player give an A effort, rather than an A player give a C effort, especially if they are Buckeyes. Time will tell, as it always does. I also think it's about the coaches on staff as well. Expect to see several 'retirements'. Hope they keep some of the young guys (Haynes, Vrabel), and bring in some seasoned coaches (Heacock, Bollman, and Tressel will 'retire' or 'pursue other interests')......
