2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Until recently, I've always had the mindset of "we already got the one we need, let's move onto another position." But after that not being the case on so many occasions, and highlighted by the severe change our running back situation took this season (going into the year thinking "heck yes, it's gonna be the Berry/Smith show for the next few years!), I've done a 180. Now, I'd consider myself a supporter of the "load 'em up if you can get 'em" philosophy. If a kid like Gunner wants to play here, we give him a spot. There's no guarantee that anyone will work out, so I'd rather be stuck with a "man, who do we name the starter?" issue because there are too many candidates than "man, who do we name the starter?" because nobody seems to have panned out enough to be worthy of it.

Ohio State needs linebackers (depth) and offensive tackles (Need and depth) especially at LT. Wouldn't hurt to get someone that is good against the pass @ safety. OSU was soft up the middle in the back 7 this year. Looking at the list below, IMO we need OT (2), LB (2) and DE (2).

WR - Southward, Thomas, Lewis, Epitropoulos (Punter?)

DE- Washington

OL - Elflein (DL?), Boren

MLB - Roberts, Perry (LEO?)

S- Bogard, Powell (OLB?

CB -Murray

TE- Thomas

QB -Jones

RB - Dunn, Ball

I agree with you on the possible (in my mind, likely) LEO for Perry. Powell, though, will be a DB. I'd be shocked to see him at LB. And Just wanted to clarify on your needs... do you mean we need 2 total for each of those or 2 more? I think 2 more LB's and I'd lean to 3 more OL. DE isn't as pressing as those in my mind so I'd say 1 more DE would be nice, especially if it's Pittman.

Honestly, I think they will regret offering Lewis and Epitropolis as WR's. I don't think either one is a National Championship caliber starting wideout. I think there are a couple kids on the 2012 commit list that are just homer offers. Urban needs not to worry about alienating coaches and if their kid doesn't fit then take the offer away. With the scholarship reduction there isn't any room for error.

I remember people saying the same thing about guys like Hartline, Gonzalez, Boren, Jordan Hall, etc. They all did pretty well. Further, for each of those guys, I could name two that I thought were "sure things" that never panned out. It's pretty tough to tell how they'll pan out until they get here.

I was stating two more at each position. I would like to add three more O linement but beyond Davidson, Kozan and Diamond, the pickings are pretty thin unless we go after a recruit that has verballed elsewhere. So when I stated two more linemen, I was attempting to be more realistic.

Two more linbackers for sure. I think Roberts is a sleeper. He is tough, smart and fast. I really like him as a Mike. Injuies and transfers have hurt us bad here. Odenigbo and Monheim are the only two possibilities unless Urban can pull it a couple of LBs that previously had no interest.

As far as DE, I was thinking one or two more based on the rumors about Pittman and a couple of other recruits.

Based on Powells height, speed and the amount of bulk he could put on once he hits the S&C program, I could see him adding another 20 - 30 pounds which would make him a Taylor Mays type safety or a fast OLB. Just speculation on my part.

There will be some attrition this year. I'm guessing at WR and RB. It will be interesting to see how players react to Urban's philosphy. But when signing day comes in Feb, I see OSUs class at 23 total (+1 or 2)

And in my mind, none moreso than Sanzenbacher. But this is a tough debate to have. It's like Tom Brady (sorry, I know it's taboo to name a player from tsun, especially after Saturday and all) becoming a huge success after going in the 6th round. But people always disregard the fact that there are 10,659 other 5th rounders who ended up being garbage. (I can't back these numbers up) Long story short, though you can sometimes find diamonds in the rough, big name recruits pan out at a much higher rate than no name recruits.

That being said, I will never agree with the practice of pulling a scholarship based on ability level. If the kid has character issues, academic issues, etc, go for it. But if you're pulling the scholarship offer that has already been accepted because you think you have a shot with a better caliber player, then shame on you.

I never said anything about sure things and those guys are the exception to the rule. Then OSU had room to miss on guys like that especially when they ran a more pro-style offense. Now with the spread and less schollies they will have to be careful with throwing a bone to kids.

I've never posted in the recruiting section before, but this nonsense pulled me into it

Are you out of your mind? These are kids who would KILL to be Buckeyes. These are kids who said yes when the rest of the world looked at them and said "you are crazy if you don't say no." I guarantee you that these are the type of kids you look back on senior day and say, "they are true Buckeyes." They will work their butts off to prove that they belong and will give everything they have to this university.

You win with people. You win with Buckeyes. These guys are Buckeyes

EDIT: apologies for the profanity... never really considered d*** to be profane, but I will refrain from using it here agian

I couldn't agree more and had this exact conversation with a fellow buckeye fan at the office. Pulling in 5 star recruits from all over the country would be exciting but do they want to be "Buckeyes" or are just looking for a way to the NFL. I would rather win with passionate players who would give anything to be a Buckeye then guys who are just chasing a name and a dream.

Try expressing the opinion without the profanity or personal attack. This is the recruiting forum.
