2012 In-state Players to Watch

Mason Monheim gets offer from Illinois

Saturday, November 6, 2010

Well, now that it's out in the open, I guess I'll chime in on it. As of yesterday afternoon, Orrville junior RB/LB Mason Monheim received his first football scholarship offer...and it's a big one.

After being named the Ohio Cardinal Conference Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday, Mason received an offer from the University of Illinois this past Thursday. Many of you know that the Illini are coached by Ron Zook, and that Coach Zook was an assistant at Orrville during the Mo Tipton era in the 1970's.

I'm sure that connection played a part in Illinois being first in the door, but it's because of Mason and his ability that the offer was made.

The way recruiting seems to work now, I'm guessing this won't be the only offer he'll receive. Mason has already attended a game at another Big10 program via invitation, and will attend a game at a Big12 school later this month. Both visits are of the unofficial variety per NCAA rules, but will only help to get his name out there in the recruiting circles.

Prep football: Elyria Catholic can?t escape early hole, falls to Orrville

The Red Riders? next scoring drive was impressive, as they moved the ball 88 yards on 18 plays, eating up more than nine minutes of the second quarter. The bulk of the yards were gained by pounding senior running back T?ontre Simpson and junior fullback Mason Monheim through the middle of the line for short to medium gains.

Orrville again put the pressure on the Panthers when Monheim scored on an 18-yard run late in the third quarter to make it 22-6, and Elyria Catholic spent the next three drives desperately trying to get the ball into the end zone and itself back into the game.

Elyria Catholic comeback falls short in 22-14 loss to Orrville

Orrville (9-3) found the most effective way to slow the explosive Panthers offense was to keep them off the field. The Red Riders offense kept the ball on the ground for most of the game, grinding out yardage and running down the clock, highlighted by their marathon 12-play, 88-yard scoring drive in the second quarter which took 9:12 off the clock and ended with Mason Monheim scoring on a 5-yard touchdown run.

Kings and Mt. Healthy entered Friday night's second-round playoff game with similar resumes. Both teams featured long winning streaks (nine for the Owls and eight for the Knights). Each squad went undefeated in its division and scored a convincing first-ound postseason win. Both showed abilities all season to score big numbers on offense and lock opponents down on defense.

But only one team had Jamire Westbrook.

Westbrook - Kings' standout junior halfback - toted 40 carries for 215 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Knights to a 35-28 win at Mason's Dwire Field.

When he gets down there, he's like a magnet," Olds said of Westbrook, who has been offered by UC and Kansas. "He finds it, attacks it and gets in there."

Fitch's Mahone Looking For More Recruiting Attention | Bucknuts.com

Coming off of a five-touchdown, 167-yard performance in a first-round, 42-35, OT playoff victory over Willoughby South, Austintown-Fitch's Will Mahone is ready for the next stiff challenge against Solon in the Division I, Region 1 semifinals.

"It's exciting to go against a good team like Solon," Mahone said. "They're undefeated and we have a chance to knock them off. It'll be a great battle."

Unfortunately for the Falcons, the champions of the Federal League in their final season in the conference, they'll have to take on the Comets without their top junior signal caller, Demitrius Davis, who was injured against the Rebels.

Monheim is one heck of a player, Zooker has Orrville connections so offer was'nt big surprise....my opinion is that when/if the Indiana offer comes, look for him to follow fellow Red Rders Chase Hoobler and Max Pirman to the Hoosiers...Congrats to Monheim![/QUOTE]

edit....Pirman to Nebraska

UC has also offered five other area players, including Colerain linebacker Joe Bolden (6-3, 220), Kings running back Jamire Westbrook (5-9, 190), Moeller wide receiver Monty Madaris (6-2, 185), Middletown cornerback Cody Quinn (5-11, 165). La Salle defensive end Ryan Leahy (6-6, 240) was reportedly offered by UC, according to ScoutingOhio.com.

Sycamore tight end A.J. Williams (6-6, 255) was recently offered by Ohio University.

While several additional offers will certainly arrive later for the 2012 class, the early offers indicate a strong presence in the area.

?The scary part about the talent in Cincinnati for the Class of 2012 is there are still players that are not (publicized yet) ? meaning that as the recruiting process continues more names will be popping up,? Porter said.

Boardman pulls away from youthful Niles - TribToday.com

What was perfect for Boardman early on was the shooting of Dayne Hammond. The junior scored 10 first-quarter points, and finished with a game-high 18. He scored his team's first 10 points of the game.

The 6-foot-5 Hammond showed off his multiple skills right from the start. After scoring the first basket of the game on a driving layup, Hammond hit a 15-foot jumper and scored on a hook shot before bringing the Spartan fans to their feet with a dunk.

"I came out pumped. I just tried to play my usual game, and things fell into place," Hammond said. "It's always nice to get off to a fast start and get into a groove."
