2011 Wonderlic Scores (S-E-C, no fairley score)

Since Patterson will still be a [censored]in' top ten pick...anyone ever conclude that just maybe some of the dudes just say "[censored] it" and just sit there for a few min? The test seems to matter far less for a defensive prospect. If I was a defender, I'm not really taking a test seriously that has little bearing on my actual job placement, especially when I just spent three or four years in college. What motivation do they have to perform well? Bragging rights?

A competitor would try to do well at everything. Wonderlic, 40, bench etc. I think the test is a good indicator of intelligence and its great to have smart football players. I will say this about Peterson, he is very articulate and engaging. Best of luck.

If there is any chance at all that a poor test score could drop you even 1 slot, and cost you a significant amount of money in the process, why would anyone just sit there and say fuck it? The #3 overall draft pick makes a lot of money but not as much as the overall #2 does.

Its an easy test. You can practice for it. Why would you give the other guy an excuse to pay you less?

Which explains why top athletes are always at or near the top of their class in studies.

People are competitive in some areas and not in others. Trying to figure out "why" a low score is turned in for the Wonderlic, other than the simplistic "he's stupid," is navel-gazing IMO.

Horseshit. I'll fuck you up in Simpsons trivia and I'll foul the shit out of you in basketball. In a math-off, I'll just yell out numbers while you're answering because I couldn't give a fuck less.

Well, the rookie contract isn't the money one, is it? I mean, sure, ten mil is nice...but so is eight mil playing for a better team. You don't have a clue as to how someone expecting multi-millions would act about making a little less. I don't either...I'm just speculating. But if the job I currently work at asked me, before hiring, to take a test..."here, take this stupid fuckin' test. You'll be hired regardless of your results. But you may make two grand less per year if you bomb". I'm peacing the fuck out.

To each his own I guess.

I'm not leaving $20 on the table, let alone the kind of money they are talking about, when all I have to do is take a simple test that I can study my ass off for (and shouldn't be that far from what I have been doing in class the past 3-4 years if I'm a college football player).

I can see a score in the mid 20's or so being a case of apathy, test anxiety or some such thing but its hard to get past "rock fucking stupid" as the culprit behind a single digit score.

I don't need your violin, Buckyle. My loans were paid off long ago.

I'm pretty sure his point goes beyond more than just one player - Patterson - and the fact that there are too many "student-athletes" that are students in name only.

As for your theory, the world is full of guys who just said "fuck it" when they were asked to apply themselves because they thought they were set for life or it was the cool thing to do. Most of them never amount to anything.

I could apply myself and respond...fuck it.

If it cost you a draft slot, it most certainly would be less earnin'.

I'm with Jax on this one I think. I mean why would you give up money just to blow off a simple test? Plus they might look at the results in terms of motivation to study and/or apply oneself, which could be much more of an indicator to an NFL team that how smart you actually are. It would seem to me that if you aren't guaranteed one of the top 2 or 3 slots, you would do all you can to look as impressive as you could for all NFL teams. The rookie contract might not be as much, but if you get hurt, it's the only contract you will get.

I honestly don't understand how some of these guys can call themselves "student-athletes." It makes people like me, actual students, pretty irritated. This is the guy getting free tutoring 5 days a week and he can barely spell his own name right? Jeesh.

There was a list posted somewhere that had numerous universities average student SAT scores, and the average for football recruits. I think Florida had one of the largest gaps at close to 400 points. For almost any decent public university, the gap was well over 200 points. Michigan's was over 300. Ohio State was not listed, but I certainly doubt it was any different than the norm.

Now assume that some of the football recruits at UCLA, Florida or Ohio State are at, and in many cases above, the overall freshman average. That means that some have to be significantly lower than the football team average usually within 50 of 1000. Since there is a floor of 820 (you get 400 for showing up) for eligibility, that would mean an awful lot of football recruits are firing on all cylinders to pull an 830 or 850 to drag the fb average down so far below the freshman class average.

Put it this way. Assume that next year's long snapper (who was accepted to Harvard) had a 1500. That would mean that two other recruits would need to score bare minimum 820s to get the average down to 1050.

As Lou Holtz famously told Johnny Carson, "there are a lot of college football players out there who can do everything with a football except autograph it."
