2011 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Anyone have an idea of how many slots the coaching staff is looking to make available for the 2011 class? I ask because obviously its different every year but it seemed like with 18 this past class it was on the small side... FL had 28 but probably had a lot to fill to get 85. 22-25 seem reasonable?
19 plus attrition from the Juniors. No idea if 22 is reasonable, I suppose it depends on how well Pryor, Posey and some of the other studs do. I hope its just the loss of the graduating Seniors.

The Scholarship Chart shows we have 19 spots currently available for the 2011 class. Every year there are players that leave early for the league, transfer to another school (due to lack of playing time or academic reasons usually), can no longer play football due to injury, etc.

It always differs from year to year how many scholarships open up like you said, but I think you can usually count on at least 3 opening up on average in a given year, so 22 sounds like a safe number and could go up from there. At Ohio State, any time we can sign more than 20, it's a big class. And with the bumper crop of BCS-level talent in Ohio, the 2011 class has a great chance to be a great one.

BTW, a belated welcome to BuckeyePlanet from me to you Ferrari! Nice to have ya on the board.

I'm seriously disappointed.

Yesterday we had a new commitment every 4 hours or so. I woke up to find no one committed between the hours midnight and 7 AM. I guess Tressel can't close. :tongue2:

Tressel CAN'T CLOSE!! But damn he sure has gotten a great start this year!!

IMO, I think he intentionally tells the kids to space it out through the year to keep the recruiting junkies satisfied (or on edge). Some of these folks on here just can't get enough of recruiting and it makes me chuckle:lol:

Defensive linemen

Now we get to the fun stuff. I have said about positions in the past that I only hope we see a class as good as the one we were talking about. Never have I hoped to see a class again like this defensive line class for 2011. This is something like we see coming out of south. This is a class that the state of Florida would be happy with. There are tackles as well as ends. The best thing about it is it is full of the kind of players that makes JT use the term "bigs". Versatile players who could project to a couple of different positions, and more importantly they could be plugged in at several different positions and not miss a beat. It starts with Kenny Hayes. I have to make him the number one lineman in the class because of that versatility. He can play either end position. Miller is arguably the better weak side end but he is not as big. I don't think he could play on the strong side. His coach is a man I have a great deal of respect for. He has coached at the college level. He says he does not think Miller has the frame to add the weight to play on the strong side. Both are elite athletes. They have the first step that makes them special. They have the motor that is so important to being a defensive player. The next player on my list is an unknown to most of you. He belongs in the discussion of the best in the state of Ohio.

Offensive linemen

Keep in mind that Chase Farris could grow into a left tackle and many people see Michael Bennett as a guard at the next level. That is not a reach. I don't think we can discount tackle. He does not have the height you look for but I think reach is as important, and I would say more important. Look at the reach on Bennett. They would be the top two OLs if I saw them as primarily OLs in college.

This is not close to last years class which had at least three either tackles but it serves the Buckeyes purposes with several top guards.

I like to look at film several times before I come to a final decision
but right now my top OLs are:

Bobek looks very good on film. Is definately an interior OL. Due to his size, Center is a great fit. He moves well and is physical. I'm excited about our OL commits thus far.

Is Bobek also one of those versatile recruits that Tress loves, and can move between C and G?

He is a Center... and has said the staff expressed to him that he was the #1 Center on our board. I suppose he COULD play guard... but he'll take over for Brewster... while Mewhort slides to Guard.

Smith | March 27, 2010 | Nick Leach

The Buckeyes are poised for a fantastic haul with the 2011 recruiting class. Today, ThaRinger takes a look at prospects OSU has offered and gives our (too) early predictions of where each will end up. While there are many other offered prospects out there, the 20 listed below represent those where we feel there?s a legitimate chance they could end up a Buckeye.

We hope to make this a semi-regular feature depending on how the class unfolds over the next 10 months. Names of recruits will be getting added and removed as things shake out so be sure to check each update for your favorite players.

^That was a good read. I agree with most if not all of those predictions... would love to see Vaughters come north to old Columbus town though...

There's a pretty decent shot at that. A writer for Scout (and GT fan) said UGA/OSU/Texas are out front a little of the others, so that's about as good as you can hope for this early for a 5* OOS recruit.

So of Ohio lineman we have yet to offer, who do you guys see as most likely to receive an tOSU offer and in what pecking order, out of Ryan Kelly, Jack Miller, Tommy Brown, Donovan Clark, and Matt Skura?

I suppose its possible that if we were able to get Mangiro, and then the near certain gets of Bennett and Walker, we might see none of those five lineman get an tOSU offer. What is the most like likely number of total OL/DL recruits in this class? I'm guessing 9 at the lowest, 11 at the highest.

In no particular order we're already more than halfway there:

1 Miller
2 Hayes
3 Farris
4 Underwood
5 Bobek
6 Carter
7 (Walker)
8 (Bennett)
9 ?
10 ?
11 ?

So provided some screwy thing happens with Bennett or Walker, we probably have somewhere between 1-3 ships remaining for Mangiro, Westerman, the five Ohio lineman I mentioned above, and any others, in state or out of state, we look at. What a nice 'dilemna' to have with almost ten months to go!
