2011 tOSU Offense Discussion

There are plays a coaching staff can dial up to take advantage and make a defense pay big time. I think it's time to call in a consultant, 1-800-Ric-hRod to coach up Braxton and the offense. I'm only half kidding, but something has to be done.

1-800-urbie, put him on speed dial

The Buck(s) Stops with Fickel

There is really no way to ignore it, the coach is not ready. He did not have the team prepared, and he did not make adjustments -- that is, if there was a game plan to adjust before kick off.

Bollman has been the target of most of the knowledgeable critics. But, regardless if Gee/Smith did not allow any Offensive personnel changes, Fickel should be directing the coordinators. Fickel is not directing, managing, leading, or presenting himself as a capable OSU head coach.

With, or without the TAT-5, they have more gifted players than nearly any team in the nation. I would not replace more than 3 or 4 Buckeyes offensive players with MSU players. Fewer would be swapped from Miami's or Toledo's offenses, and they both moved the ball more effectively than OSU.

I am wondering if his career success to date, has resulted from Heacock's direction. Is he just a passionate guy, and good recruiter?

With his X and O experience, he should be an expert in analysis of Offense vs Defense schemes and plays. You can't strategize defensively, without understanding the other side of the ball.

The Buckeye's are being poorly coached, and the players are being cheated of their potential.

This is to be expected with all that has happened.

Nonsense.

There is no way in hell youth and inexperience are an excuse for what is going on. Every one of the 100 or so FBS schools that have an offense more functional than OSU's would take the majority of our offensive recruits.

Youth would be a valid excuse for an inconsistent offense but given the talent level there is NO excuse for an offense that is completely dysfunctional against all but the most over matched defensive teams.

That should be the part that scares the beejesus out of people.....Sparty and Miami are middle of the road teams at best.

I agree. If Bollman's calling predictable/unimaginative plays the end result of which is 80 or so total yards halfway through the fourth quarter, then it is Fickell's job, as the head coach, to change things.

Fickell HAS to realize that there was something seriously not working on the offensive side of the ball yesterday.

Yesterday?? How about after the Toledo game?? Or the Miami game at the latest. That's one of my biggest issues. We're five games into the season, and he just now sees there's a problem?? I'm sorry but too late pal. This should have been obvious after Toledo.

We have some pretty versatile players on our offense; Miller, Hall, Reed (really think he could be a huge package threat), Brown, Boren, Stoneburner......not to mention the different sets of RB's we could have out there together.

That, for me, is one of the most frustrating aspects regarding our offense this year. Such an array of weapons that could make it a nightmare for DC's to prepare for, yet we don't utilize them. I'm not going to turn this into a coaching discussion, but I can't help but think what a guy like Beckman would have this offense doing.

Like others have said, it's the pre-game preparation and in-game adjustments (lack thereof for both) that is frustrating - not the player performance.

This is the most concerning and disappointing thing for me. What are those offensive stats going to look like after this Nebraska-Illinois-Wisconsin stretch? I think things are going to get worse before they get better unfortunately.

Completely agree with the rest of your post too. We knew there'd be quite a large drop-off in production all things considered, but this is just ridiculous. I watch a ton of college football, and I'm not sure I've seen a more inefficient offense in the country, and the numbers are proving that. With the talent this team supposedly has, there is simply no excuse.

I just don't see our players being put in positions to succeed like I see other colleges do with their players.

This to the Nth.

I'm angry. These kids deserve better than this. They went through a lot of bull[Mark May] this offseason. They are being let down big time. I think we even struggle in the 3 wins we've had this season if we played them in game 5--where they've had a chance to see how ineffective we are offensively. I didn't expect to go out and win the Big Ten this year. But I didn't expect to be counting on winning against Indiana and Purdue and hoping for one other just to make a bowl game.

Offensively, we are awful. There are teams that are doing light years better with talent that isn't even in the same galaxy.

People need to be held accountable now. Waiting until the offseason may be easier, but it will be to the long term detriment of the program.

Sadly, I think this post is spot on. I'm beginning to think that the only chance Fickell has to be the coach beyond this season is to make a drastic coaching change on the offensive side of the ball. I don't know if that means handing the playcalling responsibilities to someone else, stepping in himself, or what, but if the offensive playcalling is as predictable as it was against MSU, opposing defenses likely won't have much trouble stopping OSU, and 2-3 more wins may be the best case scenario this year. As you say--the players deserve better than this.

When you have a highly skilled runner at QB and another highly unskilled-at-pretty-much-everything QB, you should probably roll the former out of the pocket and not the latter.
