2011 tOSU Offense Discussion

I just don't understand why we didn't at least try spreading them out and maybe giving Braxton a lane to run in. And where the heck was Stoneburner? He's our best weapon and we hardly play him. It's going to be a very long year.

I was not at the game, so I could not see who was covered and who was not. My best guess is that teams are putting two men on Stonburner since all of our other receivers are so inexperienced.

That brings us back to the problems of the past few years, bad choices by two people in particular. Posey, nuff said, and Duron Carter for not doing the work in the classroom. Having those two guys would have helped a freshman QB a lot.

You pass the ball to set up the draw. Bollman called more draw plays than the Buckeyes completed passes in this game. That is unacceptable.

You run the ball to set up the play-action pass. The Buckeyes either ran the ball over and over or ran play-action over and over. The non-existent mixing up of play calling didn't even try to keep the defense off balance or use one play to set up the other. That is unacceptable.

Running play action draw plays on third and long multiple times when the defense had been blitzing all game and the draws hadn't been working and weren't fooling anyone anyway is unacceptable.

Running pass patterns 15 to 20 yards down field that take time to develop with no short check down or crossing patterns all game when your QB didn't have time in the pocket all night is unacceptable.

Continuing to do all of these things throughout the entire game with no adjustments is especially unacceptable.

Waiting until Bauserman is in at QB to roll your QB out of the pocket for the first time is terrible.

Running play action primarily out of shotgun rather than I-formation and having no counter boots with Braxton is terrible.

Everyone thought Bollman was no good for most of the past decade. Without Tressel as a shield, Bollman looked like he wasn't competent enough to coordinate a high school offense, much less one of the premiere programs in college football.

Very sad and something that needs to be addressed or it will get this entire coaching staff fired, if it hasn't already.

I feel bad because Fickell was handcuffed with a short term contract and is completely incapable of making a move.

as painful as it is to admit it.....this post is spot on. The thing that really gets old.....I cant remember a throw on 1st down. I cant remember one screen pass set up. I cant remember but a few times we spread them out and tried the short intermediate pass. WHAT DID WE PRACTICE.....WHAT WAS OUR GAME PLAN? WHY ARE WE NOT TAKING STEPS FORWARD AND MAKING IN GAME ADJUSTMENTS? This is really bad. This was the 1st really good team we played and we looked horrible. There is NOWAY this team is that untalented. This is a COACHING issue. JT was running the whole offensive show and I cant believe this is what we have left without him. This is very frustrating.....how do we finish .500? Go Bucks

We bring in talent every year, they just die on the vine. How come every year we keep talking about how the O-Line underperforms? Since people do not want to blame Bollman, what could be the problem?

It is Bollman. He has no creativity. We should've at least attempted a screen yesterday. Something other than dives, tosses and curl routes. Run, Penalty, Run and Pass on 3rd and long won't get it done. Although I don't blame him for running such a vanilla offense, he needs to open it up. We're playing someone new at every skill position, except TE. It's rough right now, but once these kids get in the weight room and experience under their belt I believe they're going to be a very good group.

This is spot on. Dantonio's one of the brighter defensive minds in college football--it's not surprising that OSU had only about 85 yards halfway through the 4th quarter yesterday.

When you motion a fullback into the slot, or a runningback outwide, you create a different look for the defense.

If never once has the opposing team seen the ball thrown to said runningback or fullback, you're making us play a man down with one less blocker.

It's idiocy.

When you bring in a struggling 5th year senior to replace a struggling true freshman, you're making a change to see if you can get any momentum.

When you proceed to call an option for the less mobile senior on the first play followed by two long developing pass plays that he's been unable to connect on consistently, you've killed any hopes of attaining momentum. No easing them into the game, nothing quick to get them to settle down.

When the stars aren't there, the coaching ineptitude really comes to light doesn't it?

As bizarre as it sounds, we could win our division and still play for the Big Championship!
Nebraska really doesn't count at this point. Not our division.
This will take first beating Illinois at Champaign. I think this is still doable.
Then you have 2 weeks to prepare for Wiscy in the 'Shoe!

Wait, did we actually run the option again with Bauserman? I was way too hammered at that point

How can an Ohio State offensive line be THAT bad?

I don't think the O line was the major problem. They didn't have the best game, that's for sure, but they didn't perform as bad as it seems.

Sparty was blitzing on every down. Often bringing 2 or more linebackers. On every play. You can't block 7 or 8 with 5 linemen. You fix that blitzing with screens, misdirection and quick slants, none of which were called, at least what I noticed.

There were a couple of plays where Sparty d-linemen were jumping the snap and got in the backfield right away. Those happened right after a couple of false starts. I think Brax and/or the coaching staff tried to keep from having false starts by always going on the came count. A high school defense would figure that out after about one series. After they started changing up the count again, that stuff stopped.

I don't think the line had a great game by any stretch, and I think they would be the first to agree with that statement, but they are just one part of a much much bigger problem, starting with the play calling.

There are plays a coaching staff can dial up to take advantage and make a defense pay big time. I think it's time to call in a consultant, 1-800-Ric-hRod to coach up Braxton and the offense. I'm only half kidding, but something has to be done.
