I am excited to see how all of the experience that the younger guys got last year plays into this year. I think the threat of losing playing time will really drive the defense to be great. Unlike some of the years past where guys were locked into spots, everything is more up in the air and guys will practice harder and better trying to get their spots moving into the next few years. This D might end up being one of the best we have seen in a while. Everything you want in a D. Solid D line with pass rushers(Simon, Williams) and run stuffers (Hankins, Goebel). Versatile backfield with 7-8 guys that have experience (Moeller, Evege, Bryant, Johnson, Barnett, Oliver, Howard, Clarke). A hungry linebacker core (Klein, Sweat, Sabino) and young guys to push them all (Grant, Grant, Shazier, Bell). Great mix, fire under their asses in Fickell, and something to prove. Look out.

The defensive talent is sick....including the back 7. How well they play together and mixing in a new lb coach should be the only question marks. I cant wait to see who grabs the starting spots at lb, safety and cb. Go Bucks

I really wouldn't consider our pass rush as a weakness...

In the articles defense....who steps into Cam`s spot will be a big deal. He was very consistent with his pressure and he had a great bull rush. His spot is the only big concern I have with our defense. I still think Nathan Williams will pick up the slack. Who plays in the other DE spot? I think Simon will play both DE and DT. Go Bucks

John Simon, Adam Bellamy, Johnathan Hankins will be the primary three with Garrett Goebel, Joel Hale, Darryl Baldwin and Melvin Fellows looking to get some time as well.

I think we will see A LOT of different looks from the defensive front this season to the point where calling them defensive ends or defensive tackles will be almost meaningless.

Pass Rush ought to have been labelled a mystery, not a weakness. With the DL talent we have in place with Simon, Williams, Hankins, Goebel, Bellamy along with the incoming guys, its easy to see the minutes go somewhere. I think this will be a very versatile line. Could go big with Simon, Hankins, Goebel, Bellamy along with Hale or Farris. Could go fast with Williams, Miller, Shazier, Simon. I just say, go crazy aggressive.

Since this is the overall defense thread I'm going to call a premature launch on that goo. I'm not terribly comfortable with comparing a defense replacing it's best player with arguably the best defense tOSU has fielded...EVER.

If you were referring only to the defensive line you should probably re-read the first post...and it's still a reach.

I think you misread. The comparison seems to be to 2002's versatility on the defensive line. The quote was that Hankins, Bellamy, Williams, Simon etc. will be lining up all over the line; thus calling one or the other just a DE or just a DT would be difficult. These guys will be DT/DE's depending on match-up and down. That is similar to the 2002 D-line with Peterson, Smith, Scott and Anderson lining up all over the gaps.

I personally agree. In 2011, I think that we just have D-linemen with Williams a more true DE and Hankins the more true DT.

At least, I think I've read that right

Agreed.

More like the '85 Bears.

The 1973 defense, with 3 straight shutouts in conference play, and 43 points allowed in 10 regular season games, says hello. :wink2:
