We have "SEC Media Days", you have "Big-10 Media Day". You already self limit the thing to one day. Maybe because the Indiana and Purdue football fans are not as crazed as lesser program fans of our conference, who want to have as much exposure as the Bama and Gators and Tigers? Who knows. But our press fest has been more than a one day affair since forever.

But I'm sure ESPN would love to have all the Big-10 coaches on ....... just so they all can be asked how they feel about tOSU's cheatin' and rule breakin' :lol:

(simma....I'm referring to ESPN's vendetta )

I'm sure we'll get tons of ESPN questions about the "bag man" rumors about Cam and the Tat gate surrounding Bammer too.

Better names, sure. Better coaches, yeah SEC probably has the edge by a bit.

Still, I don't think Steve Spurrier is an elite coach anymore. When's the last time he won anything? Miles - good coach? Yeah, but great coach? give me a break.

You have better recruiting pools which leads to better talent which leads to better teams. If you swap coaches amongst the B10 and SEC I honestly don't really see much of a difference.

Saban is an excellent coach. Dan Mullens after what he did at MSU I would say he is a good coach. Chizik - obviously he has a NC thanks to sCAM but look at his years at Iowa State. Muschamp we'll find out but Meyer was a great coach. Richt I think is a very good coach but I don't know if i'd give him elite status since he really hasn't won anything but a lot of games.

We "had" Tressel/Paterno (name recognition alone, I know he's not much of a coach these days). I think Ferentz is a very good coach considering the recruiting classes he brings in. D'Antonio has turned every program he's ever touched around and seems to be really making an impression at MSU. Bielema is young and has been churning out 10 win seasons. Pelini managed to turn Nebraska around in a hurry and is putting a solid program back together. Fitzgerald has done decent with what little he's had to work with.

I think the SEC is better at the top, but after the first couple coaches it's a tossup. You give D'Antonio/Ferentz/Bielema/Fitzgerald the talent that a Bama/Florida/LSU/Georgia/Auburn field and I don't see much of a difference in the teams performances.

SEC has more "characters" which is where they win, B10 coaches outside of Pelini are pretty boring in front of a camera (well, can't discount Paterno)

I base my criteria on BCS games and wins. Outside of Ferentz and Paterno (who doesn't do much anymore), who is the Big Ten's leading coach now that Coach Tressell has retired? Who's the figurehead of the league?


But your point is well taken. When Meyer resigned, the SEC did lose some "Coaching Gravitas"

The Big Ten thing has been a 2-day event for many years. The Kickoff Luncheon is on the second day, and that's been around since 1970.

I did notice that tickets for the luncheon are still available this year. They sold out quickly the last few years, and tOSU normally has the most fans. Perhaps a lack of enthusiasm among Buckeye fans for the autograph session (you need a luncheon ticket to attend the autograph session) is partly responsible for it not being sold out as of this morning.

Figurehead is between Pelini, Paterno or at this point Beilema (yack)...


edit: What Mag said is what I was trying to convey. I see Saban as elite and the rest as good. B1G had an 'elite' coach in Tressell and now we have a large group of very good coaches.

Allow some of them to switch schools or talent pools and I think we'd see similar results in success.
