2011 Rivals/Scout/etc. National & Regional Rankings

States of recruiting: Ohio - ESPN

By Tom Luginbill
ESPN Recruiting

Ohio high school football has a proud tradition and is known for producing prospects. While it was a little bit of a down year last year, the state features seven prospects who rank in the top 10 nationally at their respective positions this year, including two at premium positions with QB Braxton Miller (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) and DE Steve Miller (Canton, Ohio/McKinley).

Normally, Ohio State will put a fence around the state and land each and every top prospect it wants. So when the Buckeyes lost the state's top prospect, OLB Jordan Hicks, last year to Texas it was a bit of a surprise. We didn't feel that hurt Ohio State's class last year as much as others did, but it made it a priority for Ohio State to hit on many of this class' top players, and the Buckeyes have certainly done that in the early going. In fact, seven of the state?s top 20 prospects are committed to Ohio State, including Braxton Miller and Steve Miller, and the Buckeyes are in the mix for the two top 20 players who are still uncommitted -- Under Armour All-American CB Doran Grant (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent and Mary) and three-star athlete Shane Wynn (Cleveland/Glenville).

Top prospect

QB Braxton Miller

What makes Miller so dangerous is that he is an excellent passer -- better that Terrelle Pryor and Troy Smith coming out of high school -- and a running threat. What makes Miller so valuable is that he may be needed on the field early at Ohio State, and the Buckeyes definitely need him from a depth and talent standpoint. We would love to see him in the spread offense, but obviously that will not be the case in Columbus. However, Buckeyes fans should be happy Miller stayed home to play for Ohio State.

Remember this name

ILB Sean Duggan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier)
If Duggan, a Boston College commit, pans out like Luke Kuechly has for Eagles, it will make the second St. X linebacker prospect to surprise in the last three classes. Duggan brings toughness, awareness and a nose for the ball that Boston College has become accustomed to having. He lacks ideal size and speed, but he plays the position with passion and is rugged. BC has built a quality, winning program with guys like Duggan.

Taking up residence

Here are the colleges that are doing the best with prospects from Ohio.

Ohio State
The Buckeyes have cleaned up in Ohio with No. 2-ranked quarterback Braxton Miller, top-three DE Steve Miller and four-star OG Michael Bennett (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville). In all, 12 of the Buckeyes' 17 commits are from Ohio.

For me at least, the easiest way to judge how good a recruit may be is by looking at his offers. Elite programs don't tend to give offers to kids who aren't very good. Also, if 11 of the top 100 high school players in the country (ESPN hacks) this year are from the state of Georgia, I will transfer to scUM. That's just ridiculous.

Is Ladky still at Rivals? He was not mentioned by Farrell as being part of the crew that worked on the new rankings. In fact, none of the "experts" he listed as having a say in the rankings were involved with the Midwest.

After posting that I have seen him post a couple times.

He is supposed to be the Midwest guy (Mike Farrell is listed as the MW guy), but was not part of the rankings process. Really makes no sense to have a list without even covering an entire region.

I asked Farrell if anyone at Rivals has seen Evan Spencer or Devin Smith this year and he said no.

I asked him about Mid-West scouting, Devin Smith, Steve Miller and Joel Hale (all of these were separate questions). He didn't reply back with anything. I'm sure somebody has seen Steve Miller, but obviously I am skeptical on Rivals having actually seen or been to most of the Big Ten regional recruits. Not necessarily their job to do so, just makes it more clear about their regional biases. Obviously, the coaching staffs of the universities are doing their job quite well.

I saw somewhere in today's Rivals transcripts where they will have multiple guys attending one game in Georgia, but they don't bother making it to a Masillon-Toledo Whitmer. However, they then claim that Ohio is the #3 state for High School Football and prospects... Where do these scouting reports coming from?

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say most of the Rivals staff live in the South. They attend the Nike and Under Armor-esque camps that make it around the Mid-West (and other Northern states), but most of them see live-games from in the South. They wait on the Northern recruits for the All-Star games (where Brax and our D-Line will probably earn some 5* consideration) and the large camps that Ohio State and Penn State hold (amongst other universities).

I actually think Rivals has Miller rated closer to where I would have him, whereas Scout has him rated more on potential. That is the one recruit they seem to be the furthest apart on.

they were equally set apart on their ranking of john simon 2 years ago.

nevertheless, their midwest and ohio rankings have been getting significantly worse over the last 3 years to the point that they can't really be taken seriously anymore.
