2011 Offensive Line Discussion

Mangold (and Stepo) are not included. The comment I made here was specific to guards and tackles - two of each in the NFL. Bollman seemingly used guards and tackles interchangeably, which is complete madness.
Gotcha! Didn't read it all the way through.

And I agree with you about the uh, absurdity, of the Oline recruiting and play lately.

Previous Practices

Pre-Urban, the O-Line recruiting for 2012 was negligent. But, for the previous years, I believe there was a purposeful strategy to recruit a small number of bigs, and use the scholarships for the more flexible players.

Playing Adams, Shugarts and Brewster for 80% of the snaps for the last 4 years gave Tressel 2 to 4 more scholarships per year for Defense, Backs, and Receivers. The team was just a suspension, or an injury, away from the system crashing; but it was a successful strategy; until 2011.

With a strong 2012 O-Line class and some potential stars - Norwell (Jr); & Mewhort (Jr), and possibles: Fragel, Bobek, Underwood, Hall, Linsley, Baldwin and even Brown and Carter - it will be interesting to see how Urban spends the available scholarships in 2013 and 2014.

I thought we were usually way under (relatively that is) the scholarship cap, most years with Tressel.
