2011 Offensive Line Discussion

Can anyone explain the weekly multiple false starts? It can't be just QB cadence because it happens with both of them.
My decidedly unexpert opinion: one or two false starts per game is pretty routine, and generally to be expected of any team, not just the Buckeyes. But Shugarts seems to have a particular problem with false starts. I don't think he had one against Illinois, but if that's so, that's one of the few games during his Buckeye career where he's avoided the false-start bug.

You're right, he was FS free against the Illini. Hooray.

Last year, there was speculation that he was FS happy due to his foot problems- it hurt to pass protect, so he'd try to get into his stance quicker.

Again, speculation. But I've been asking for a FS free game for about four years now... the O has two advantages by nature (Where they're going and when they're going), and it makes no sense to give one away.

Random thought: I know we are lacking depth at tackle, but I actually am much less concerned about it with a new offensive line coach on board.

Bollman was able to take 5-star tackles (including two "the next Orlando Pace" tackles in Boone and Adams) and not do much with them.

With a new staff and especially a new offensive line coach, I am much more comfortable with guys like Norwell and Underwood developing into serviceable options.

I definitely think tackle is something we need to address in the final months of the 2012 recruiting class as well as working on a major haul in 2013 right away, but like I said, with Bollman we needed five stars to even have a shot, with someone else I am confident that they can take the guys we already have and make it work until the issue is fully addressed.

Norwell is more than "serviceable". And I believe he was a 5 star guy.
We can find a "serviceable" guy for right tackle but depth is a major issue. (maybe we see Fragel drop down to RT)
We need a couple recruits at tackle that can play right away.

Coaching will utilize good athletes. Next year - from Left to Right: Norwell, Hall, Bobek, Linsley & Mewhort. Could see Underwood challenging Bobek and, or Hall. This should be good 1st unit. Hopefully the new staff can make serviceable backups from Carter, Brown, Blackmon, St.John, and Kramer.

The staff may want to consider position changes for a few of the guys that could be looking at part-time playing time -- Fragel, Bellamy, Hale, Farris, Baldwin, &/or Fellows.

I would think that would be accurate, but hopefully we can get a LT that could play immediately...Norwell is a natural RT and despite Jack's size, he is really better suited at guard. Honestly, this is why losing Kalis really did hurt because he is game ready at either tackle spot imo. Hopefully we can still get Diamond or Dodson, but it remains to be seen if they are ready to step in right away.

In Brian Bennett's article that was posted on ESPN this morning (http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation), he posted some quotes from Urban regarding the staff he's looking for:
"If you're the best offensive line coach, I'm going to do my very best to get you to come here."

We've all assumed it would come to this (considering our OL has never seemed to match up to the hype of the big name recruits we continually bring in), but I think this is the first actual sign that Bollman's days are numbered.

Although to be honest, as far as his role as offensive coordinator goes I was impressed with his play calling in The Game. Why do we so rarely see him pull out all the stops like that? Any chance he saw the writing on the wall and knew he had to change up his style to save his job with Urban coming in?

Best 22

Probable front 4 on DL -- Simon, Hankins, Goebel, Williams. Bellamy & Bennett may actually be better than Goebel, and Michael will eventually be better than Hankins and Simon, but next year, I think the starting front 4 from this year will most likely be the same in 2012.

Likely, front 5 on OL - Norwell, Hall, Bobek, Linsley, Mewhort. They may not be All Americans next year, but I would not be surpised if either, or both, Norwell and Mewhort are in the running for 2nd team ALL Big10. None of the current 2012 Tackle targets will take Mewhort's or Norwell's place on the O-line.

Linsley and Bobek are relatively unproven, and Hall is an unknown. The second string players are more suspect. Hopefully, next year, with discipline and coaching, they will be ready to dominate.

For consideration, today, I believe that Bennett is the best Guard on the team. He will likely be a first three round NFL draft pick in two years, regardless of which side the ball he plays.

There has been talk of Farris, Baldwin, Fragel, & Fellows making the switch to O-Line. I don't see O-Linemen. (With a couple years, Fragel might be an NFL caliber Tackle after bulking up -- but next year, I think he can be more valuable as a Tight End).

I know this statement may upset some Defensive Line maniacs; and it is not an all or nothing proposition, but: Coaches should get the best 22 on the field. Perhaps a 2012 O-Line of : Norwell, Bennett, Mewhort, Bellamy(Guard), and Hale(RT).

We would be thinner on the D-Line, but we still have a cabinet full of talented backup D-Linemen, after a super group of starters.

Boone's problem was his love affair with the hops and barley, not Bollman.
Adams attitude eventually camed around and he was all-big10 last year and would have been this year.

I agree that Norwell can be a very good RT, and will "do" at LT if necessary.
