2011 Big Ten Leaders Division Race

A coworker, who portends to be a buckeye fan said something really stupid yesterday. It went "there's no way Ohio State loses less than 5 games this year". He mentioned Cryami, MSU, Neb, Wisky and scUM as definite losses and probably one more.

I immediately put a $100 bet to him, unsure if he actually believed this ridiculous claim and sure enough, he boldly accepted. If we lose 5 games, I'm out a c-note :slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy::slappy:

Were I a man of greater resources (or intent/interest in gambling--which I never do, btw), I would've made it 1k.

Didn't matter that I even tried to make sure he really believed it. I went through the schedule game by game and pointed out the discrepancies in his theory. 2 games, sure. 3, an absolute possibility. 4 would be the roof caving in and 5 games would assure the apocalypse wasn't going to wait til 2012. The fact that he thinks scUM is going to secure his windfall made it the hilariously high note of my day.

Someone has to punish this kind of stupidity and I don't mind if I'm rewarded for my efforts.

:oh:

The last two times that I can recall OSU starting the season with a brand new young QB that had zero game experience were 1999 and 2004. Both seasons were unmitigated disasters.

Maybe its just me but I wouldn't go betting anything I couldn't afford to lose.

I don't think Todd had much game experience, but he wasn't exactly young.

Exactly. He was what a 5th year SR getting his first starting shot?

UCLA used to have an assembly line like that when they were good. It can be done, freshman/underclassmen are a whole different story.

I may be missing a year but young guy+ no starting experience at all only happened recently in 99 and 2004 to the best of my memory. Not a prediction but just something to give pause.

I wouldn't bet money I couldn't afford to lose on Ohio State finishing above .500. Or Alabama finishing above .500. Or on (well, you get the idea). I remember Texas in 2010 - finished 5-and-7. I would never have predicted such an outcome.

Yep.

If you would have bet me after the 1998 season that the '99 team would go 6-6 I you would have made a lot of money (well not really I was broke but you get the point).

I don't think a 5+ loss season is probable but if the offense just completely implodes its most certainly possible. Miami, MSU, UNL, Wisky, PSU, Bowl Game could all be losses with a '99/'04 like offense.

But what about Pryor stepping into the starting role a few games into the season. At least Braxton has had a full spring practice schedule to get situated into the team, unlike TP.

He's going to have to be at least that good to have a chance then right? Plus Miller isn't going to have a Beanie Wells in the backfield to keep anyone honest or any veteran WR's to help him.

He may do just fine, I'm just saying it isn't out of the realm of possibility that a season with a true freshman QB doesn't end up with more losses than people were thinking possible back in the summer.

Completely agree. We have a good stable of backs. But we are missing a lot of key components on offense. That's why the D really needs to step up. So having Fickell as the HC, he knows that side of the ball is going to make-or-break his career at tOSU.

And that's why I like the Vrabel hire. He will fight to the death for his teammate/friend/coach. I expect a double digit win total (including bowl game). And I would have no problem with Luke being named HC. He gets it as a coach at OSU.

I would argue that the running game is significantly stronger as a unit this year vs 07, but we don't know if braxton and/or his WRs can keep the defense honest.

Yeah, the OL is definitely better which is a huge plus. Wells was obviously the singular threat that none of the young stable has proven they are yet.

I'd ask the question; can Miller/WR's/playcalling keep the defenses honest? Its a combination no matter what and I agree that its the key to the season.

This RB corps has more potential than I can remember in my lifetime (too young to really recall Archie and Pete). If the O-line can run block better than they have recently, there may not be much need to keep the D honest. The "potential" part is obviously a question mark.

Really, if you look back at the best running teams in recent years ('02 and '07, by my estimation), how much were the QBs keeping the D off balance compared to just needing plays on the occasional 3rd and long?

Not disagreeing with you jwins, just musing over whether the QB needs to be more than a caretaker for a significant part of the season. The play of the Silver Bullets will play a huge factor in that.

EDIT: The '02 reference applies only to when #13 was playing.

And then I read Muck's palm. When I told him it said, "Eat a bag o' dicks!", he walked away mad....

Do you mean Todd Boeckman? He didn't start in either of those years (1999 - Belisari, 2004 - Zwick then Smith)
