Kansas ahead of Texas though for the #2 spot.
[Kirk Herbstreit] I carefully considered all of the factors in my ballot, but even though Texas beat Kansas decisively in the head to head matchup, I still think that Kansas has better potential.

Re: Ohio State is still undefeated and still No. 1. The Buckeyes (22-0) were a unanimous choice, receiving all 31 first-place votes from the poll's panel of Division I coaches.

Who is underrated in the polls? Who is overrated?

My basis for comparison is kenpom.com; Ken Pomeroy's predictor of who will win a given game is the best in the USA, year-in and year-out. So who do the polls love and kenpom not?

Overrated
Notre Dame - polls say 8-9; kenpom says 22nd
UConn - polls say 6-7; kenpom says 19th
Texas A&M - polls both have at 16; kenpom says 37th
Minnesota - AP 18, coaches 20; kenpom says 42nd(!)
Vanderbilt - polls say 23-24; kenpom says 32

Underrated
Wisconsin - polls have 18-19; kenpom says 7th
Washington - polls have 19-20; kenpom says 10th
North Carolina and WV are 13th and 14th in kenpom, while AP has them T23 and 15
Illinois - kenpom says 16th; coaches say 24th, and AP out of the top 25
Maryland, Marquette and UNLV are all top-25 in kenpom but not in either poll. Maryland received no votes at all in either poll, but kenpom lists 21st. That likely makes them the most underrated team in the USA.

Ohio State probably will drop out of 1st place, but will be close and receive some #1 votes.

What does the future hold? According to Pomeroy, Ohio State has the roughest road ahead of the contenders, but the Buckeyes already have traversed a tougher road.

Ohio State's SOS is now ranked in the top 25, while Kansas and Duke are now in the region of #35. All other things held constant, Ohio State's SOS will be in the vicinity of #14 to #17 at year end.

Ohio State has tough games left at Purdue and Penn State and home against Sparty. Kansas nor Duke both play three teams ranked below Indiana, which is Ohio State's easiest game. Neither face a remaining games SOS that presents even a similar challenge as the one the Buckeyes must face.

If Ohio State wins out, then there is no way that any other team should be able to claim #1.

But voter laziness will keep Kansas ahead of tOSU if they both win out.

If that were to play out, would OSU still be the favorite for the #1 overall seed in the tournament? Better SOS and quality wins.

Fairly certain that is what happened in 2006 when OSU finished #1 but Florida got the #1 overall seed.

I think Kansas would get the #1 overall seed if both teams win out, since they would likiely have a win in the rematch against Texas, which would carry more weight than tOSU's win in rematch(es) against Wiscy.

But I don't really care about the overall #1 seed. What matters is how the team would match up against the #2 through #5 seeds in the same region.

You're right that tOSU was the final AP #1 in the 2006-07 season, while Florida got the #1 overall seed in the 2007 tournament.

I'm thinking that NC will get the job done against Duke. Kansas could lose one more time at Missouri in the last game of the year.

Still lots of basketball left and Ohio State still #1 in the Pomeroy and Sagarin computer models.

The beauty of college basketball is that the polls are meaningless, whether we are #1 or unranked. The coaches? The AP? Doesn't matter, and I love it. The worst part of college football is the endless debate about the fucking polls.

The only "poll" that matters is where the selection committee puts you in the seeding process in March. Everything else is settled on the court.

Amen to that. :)
