BuckeyeMike80;2039741; said:I think it's amazing that no one in the Big Ten other tham MSU has a loss. Sure some of the schedules have been stupidly soft, but even the bad teams in the Big Ten have been taking care of business.
That won't last past today once PeeSU gets blown out by Kentucky, but the only team with losses (MSU) has lost to 2 top 5 teams.
Ohio State men's basketball: Shed pounds, then image
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch Friday November 25, 2011
With Jared Sullinger nowhere to be seen, two of his Ohio State teammates entertained questions from the media last week about how much weight they had lost since last season.
Coach Thad Matta smiled.
?I?m going to do a poster for Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers,? he joked.
Barring unforeseen consequences from yesterday?s feasting, the Buckeyes should be as nimble as ever when they play host to Valparaiso tonight in Value City Arena, their third game in five nights.
Among those feeling the benefits of carrying fewer pounds is sophomore forward Deshaun Thomas, who was asked to gain weight before his freshman year and then shed it 12 months later.
?We just didn?t think his mobility was good enough,? Matta said.
Thomas weighed 218 before practice began this season compared to 235 last season, he said.
?I noticed at the middle of the season last year, my knees were hurting really bad,? he said. ?In the summer, we figured it out: It was too much weight.
?As I lost that weight in the summer and worked really hard, I started moving better. I was in better shape, making more moves quicker. It?s really helped me a lot.?
Several times since practice began in October, Matta has said the Buckeyes need Thomas to play well this season. For the most part, he has.
After playing sporadically off the bench last season behind ironman David Lighty, Thomas has started all five games, ranks fourth on the team in minutes, third in scoring and third in rebounding, and he is shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and nearly 80 percent from the free-throw line.
?The ability to knock down shots is great,? Matta said. ?But I see him out there and he?s trying as hard as he can on defense. I think his defense is 10 times better than it was last year.?
