2011-2012 Men's Buckeye Basketball (Final Four Season)

Without risking injury (so it shouldn't take place in-season), I'd actually like to see a jumping contest between J.D. Weatherspoon and Sam Thompson.

Highest on the backboard wins.

There's a segment for "The Journey".

Every player on this team has impressed me at one time or another through the first 4 games (including Walsh) but 2 guys have really stood out to me as very pleasant surprises. Lenzelle Smith Jr. and Evan Ravenel.

Lenzelle has really surprised me with his aggressive defense and his PG mentality on offense. He came in to OSU coming off of that wrist injury and he was out of shape. He's really developing into a good basketball player. If he can knock down some outside shots, this team can and will go a long way.

The Raven has completely surprised me with his athleticism and his offensive game. He also plays very hard on both ends of the court and plays physical defense w/out fouling. Where he's really impressed me is on the offensive end. He has a good looking jump-shot and foul shot and runs the floor very good for a 260lb big guy.

Thad Matta continues to impress. He's not just a recruiter, he's one helluva coach and leader of men.

I think it's amazing that no one in the Big Ten other tham MSU has a loss. Sure some of the schedules have been stupidly soft, but even the bad teams in the Big Ten have been taking care of business.

That won't last past today once PeeSU gets blown out by Kentucky, but the only team with losses (MSU) has lost to 2 top 5 teams.

85-47 ape rape there

Admittedly they struggled, but OSU put three true Frosh (Thompson, Scott, Williams), and two Sophs (Witherspoon and Sibert) on the court at one time last night. Given time and experience that group has the talent and athleticism to be a top 20 team and a contender in the Big Ten.

And they are our second string.

Well, actually one of them is third team because Evan wasn't on the court at the time.

And of course, if we get Ross we would push another to 3rd team as well.

Downright embarrassing.

By way of comparison, two years ago our second team was:

Simmons
Hill
Madsen
Kecman
Sarikopolous

What must practice be like.

Ohio State men's basketball: Shed pounds, then image
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch Friday November 25, 2011

With Jared Sullinger nowhere to be seen, two of his Ohio State teammates entertained questions from the media last week about how much weight they had lost since last season.

Coach Thad Matta smiled.

?I?m going to do a poster for Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers,? he joked.

Barring unforeseen consequences from yesterday?s feasting, the Buckeyes should be as nimble as ever when they play host to Valparaiso tonight in Value City Arena, their third game in five nights.

Among those feeling the benefits of carrying fewer pounds is sophomore forward Deshaun Thomas, who was asked to gain weight before his freshman year and then shed it 12 months later.

?We just didn?t think his mobility was good enough,? Matta said.

Thomas weighed 218 before practice began this season compared to 235 last season, he said.

?I noticed at the middle of the season last year, my knees were hurting really bad,? he said. ?In the summer, we figured it out: It was too much weight.

?As I lost that weight in the summer and worked really hard, I started moving better. I was in better shape, making more moves quicker. It?s really helped me a lot.?

Several times since practice began in October, Matta has said the Buckeyes need Thomas to play well this season. For the most part, he has.

After playing sporadically off the bench last season behind ironman David Lighty, Thomas has started all five games, ranks fourth on the team in minutes, third in scoring and third in rebounding, and he is shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and nearly 80 percent from the free-throw line.

?The ability to knock down shots is great,? Matta said. ?But I see him out there and he?s trying as hard as he can on defense. I think his defense is 10 times better than it was last year.?

Buckeye Content

Hello ...

Pardon the intrusion, but we have just started a new Big Ten blog that aims to provide content for each of the 12 schools. We have a good chunk of the schools accounted for but still need some folks to contribute Ohio State material.

If you are interested, please let us know at the "Contact" section at The Daily Big Ten.

I hope this post was appropriate, but we want to ensure we get the Buckeyes accounted for.

Thank you.

Does anyone have a link to a current (as of the start of this year) OSU record book? The one on the official site (link, pdf) is out of date by a few years (last season in it is 2008).

EDIT: Nevermind, I found the current one under the 2011-2012 Team Guide... LINK. They need to update the one under the archives. :)
