At the start of the second half last night in the Kohl Center, something about the look in the eyes of the Ohio State women?s basketball team said that some extreme heat was about to wash over the Wisconsin Badgers.
Up 38-37 at the break and admittedly frustrated, the ninth-ranked Buckeyes (14-0, 1-0) fairly singed the Badgers (4-5, 0-1) with a 13-0 run to start the second half and powered to a 77-61 victory in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
?I just felt like we needed to bring some more energy,? Ohio State co-captain Samantha Prahalis said. ?I couldn?t throw the ball in the ocean, but despite that I felt like I could have picked up the energy and I could have done the other things a little better.
?I could have tightened up on defense. They got so many threes in that first half that it was inexcusable. We were just giving them three after three after three. We had to limit them.?
The feeling seemed universal. The Badgers made six three-pointers in the first half and had every reason to smell a potential upset against a team they hadn?t beaten over the 18 previous games. Those thoughts evaporated in the second half with a smoldering Amber Stokes on the ball and the rest of the Buckeyes swarming on defense.
?In the first half, I don?t think we were energized on defense,? junior guard Tayler Hill said. ?We had to start playing our games. We were a little upset with the way we played in the first half.?
The defense spilled over into offense.
?We reversed the ball like we normally do in the second half,? said Hill, who led all scorers with 21 points.
moreA ship lost in a pea-soup fog would have welcomed the light that flashed on for the Ohio State women?s basketball team late in the first half yesterday afternoon in Value City Arena.
The eighth-ranked Buckeyes trailed Iowa by 15 points with 5:19 left in the half when somebody in the OSU camp flipped the switch. A blinding 29-4 run that stretched into the second half ultimately carried Ohio State safely home with an 84-71 Big Ten victory.
The Hawkeyes (9-6, 1-1) could see what was hitting them. They simply couldn?t deal with the uptick in defense or stop the combination of Samantha Prahalis and Tayler Hill. The two combined to score 58 points and knock down 9 of 13 three-point shots.
?When they got on a roll, for some reason it just took us out of our rhythm,? Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said. ?I think they finally got a sense of urgency when they got down 15 and really changed the complexion of the way they took it into the locker room.?
Prahalis scored seven of her season-high 30 points in the half-ending flurry by the Buckeyes (15-0, 2-0). Hill collected five of her 28 points.
?Our energy and effort (changed),? Prahalis said. ?We were letting the guards on the other team penetrate and the post would help, and then they would have bounce passes. It was a matter of keeping their guards in front of us. We were not playing like how we can play.?
Iowa also was stinging the Buckeyes from three-point range. The Hawkeyes hit five of their first seven attempts.

moreANN ARBOR, Mich. ? The Ohio State women?s basketball team?s unbeaten start to the season went up in the kind of smoke that would have made a volcano proud yesterday afternoon in Crisler Arena.
The eighth-ranked Buckeyes were buried by the Michigan Wolverines 73-62 in a Big Ten game that was not as close as the final score.
Ohio State (15-1, 2-1) entered the game leading the conference in scoring at 79.3 points, field-goal percentage at 47.4 percent and three-point field-goal percentage at 36.9 percent but spent most of the afternoon unable to find the rim let alone the bottom of the basket.
