2011-2012 Lady Buckeyes Basketball

Stokes played much better offensively against Oklahoma. She took it to the rim and got easy baskets. If they can get Beach playing more consistently and get some of the other young players to step up they will be dangerous down the stretch. OSU will tear teams without good guard play up.

Canisius beat down

A bigger, stronger, faster Ohio State team buried Canisius College 84-41 today in Value City Arena.

The 13th-ranked Buckeyes ran their record to 8-0 and matched the best start in 10 seasons under coach Jim Foster. The 2009-10 team also began the season 8-0.

Guards Samantha Prahalis and Tayler Hill led the OSU assault. Hill, the Big Ten's leading scorer, had 21 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Prahalis chipped in 20 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Overall, the Buckeyes scored 29 points off 24 turnovers by the Golden Griffins (3-5). Jen Morabito led Canisius with 12 points.

Finally get to see the ladies in action tonight on the BiG network. Lady Buckeyes have serious speed this season. They aren't boxing out and rebounding tonight like they should but when they get the rebound, there's serious transition game. Love it!

Lady Bucks up 58-35 over Southern with 13mins left.

Oh yeah, Taylor Hill can flat out score!

After the years of Jess and Jantel, where the guards primary duties were to bring the ball upcourt and then feed the post, it is refreshing to see that the wings and guards can score as a primary attack rather than a secondary. Speed is always dependent upon the slowest person, and yes, the Lady Bucks are speedier this year. A running offense is fun to watch, and puts up points in a hurry.

It also helps the 'drivers' Taylor and Sam, that D's are not collapsing on the middle, but keep spread out, so there are more creases to fit into as they go to the rack. That could be the big difference that we're seeing.

More of a 3 guard, two forward type of offense, where the forwards have to bang for rebounds, and so far I've not seen that attacking skill. Maybe I've missed it, but sending two to the boards lets three or so block out (on D), so maybe that's what we're seeing.

Anyway, it gives a new look to OSU, and other teams will have to adapt to defend. I'm impressed that Foster is able to get the kids to run something new (or that he's able to adapt so quickly). It shows what a good coach he really is, in my opinion. Anyway, it's great to see both male and female Basketball Bucks doing so well (at the same time).

No. 12/14 Ohio State holds on for 77-75 win at California
Prahalis scores 20 points as Coach Jim Foster wins No. 750 of his career
Samantha Prahalis had 20 points and six assists and Ohio State (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 12 AP) held off California 77-75 on Saturday to remain unbeaten and give coach Jim Foster his 750th career victory.

Tayler Hill and Ashley Adams added 15 points apiece for the Buckeyes (10-0), who led by 14 with 5:20 left before the Golden Bears rallied in the final minutes.

Cal missed a chance to force overtime when Gennifer Brandon's layup with 5 seconds remaining fell short. Reshanda Gray grabbed the rebound but missed and also failed on a putback attempt before Afure Jemerigbe's final try was off as the buzzer sounded.

Ladies just keep getting it done. They are really fun to watch this year. They've been kind of boring the past few seasons with the interior game. This years, outside-in type of offense is fun and they're really fast when they get running. I'd like to get up to C'bus when the men and women have a weekend at home to see both play.

Southern Utah & Charlotte games

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Tayler Hill scored 24 points to help No. 11 Ohio State overcome a sluggish start and beat Southern Utah 88-50 on Tuesday.

The Buckeyes (12-0), playing for the third time in four days, trailed 15-13 with 12:12 left in the first half after a field goal by Southern Utah's Carli Moreland.

Samantha Prahalis countered with a jumper to tie it 15-all before Hill hit a pair of 3-pointers for a six-point lead. The Thunderbirds (4-7) never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

The Buckeyes took a 38-25 halftime lead.

Prahalis finished with nine points but added seven assists, five steals and six rebounds.

Hill was 8 for 14 from the floor and hit half of her eight 3-point attempts and all four free throws. Twelve of 13 Ohio State players scored, with Prahalis, Darryce Moore, Amber Stokes and Raven Ferguson each contributing nine points.

13 in a row to start the season

Samantha Prahalis recorded the 800th assist of her career and Tayler Hill passed the 1,000-point plateau to carry the Ohio State women's basketball team by Washington State 79-57 tonight in Value City Arena.

In the process, the 11th-ranked Buckeyes closed out their pre-conference schedule with a 13-0 record. Hill led all scorers in the game with 21 points. Prahalis scored 18 of her points in the second half when Ohio State steadily pulled away.

Hill notched her 1,000th career point with 15:24 left in the second half. The field goal gave OSU a 51-42 lead. The Prahalis assist came nine minutes later at the end of a 12-0 run that stretched the OSU advantage from 56-45 to 68-45 with 5:59 to play. Prahalis found Martina Ellerbe for a score to become the third Big Ten player with 800 assists.

Raven Ferguson

When asked the biggest lesson that she has learned during her freshman season with the Ohio State women?s basketball team, freshman guard Raven Ferguson didn?t hesitate.

?I?ve got to get out of the high school thing where I can score anytime I want and I can do whatever high school lets you get away with,? said Ferguson, who starred at Columbus Africentric. ?It?s college now. So you?ve got to grow up.?

Ferguson meant both as a basketball player and a person. Her first three months with the Buckeyes have been eye-opening. She isn?t used to watching the start of the game from the bench, but Ferguson isn?t complaining.

?I?m a good with taking my role,? she said. ?If (coaches) tell you to do something, you?ve got to do it. You have to be able to adjust to situations. My role right now is to come off the bench, be intense, score when I can and just be a good teammate.?

Ferguson?s demeanor has caught the attention of the OSU coaching staff.

?Raven is a very coachable player,? coach Jim Foster said. ?And Raven is a sieve. She wants to excel at this game. When you have the skills that she has and you?re willing to be coached, the sky is the limit.?

The Big Ten left bruises on the Ohio State women?s basketball team last season that went beyond the familiar black-and-blue variety associated with its physical play.

The Buckeyes entered the season as the six-time defending conference champions and with back-to-back Big Ten tournament titles. They had five returning starters and were heavy favorites.

Then along came the bruises. Big Ten opponents hung six losses in 16 games on the Buckeyes and enjoyed every moment of the distress it caused.

?I could tell how happy the teams were that we didn?t win,? junior guard Amber Stokes said with a laugh. ?But we did come back to win the Big Ten tournament. We just have to come out with the mindset that we?re going to play hard. We?ve come back from our break. Now we have to play Wisconsin. We have to get ready.?

Ready or not, the Big Ten is back. The ninth-ranked Buckeyes (13-0) open conference play tonight at Wisconsin (4-8) at the Kohl Center.

This particular version of Ohio State, with returning starters Samantha Prahalis and Tayler Hill, was not picked to recapture the regular-season title in voting by the conference coaches and media in October.

Penn State, Purdue, Iowa and Michigan State were ranked above the Buckeyes in voting by the two groups.

This was not lost on OSU?s players, who also started the season unranked in both major polls.

?People didn?t have the expectation that we were going to win many games in the Big Ten,? Hill said. ?That?s why they didn?t talk about us in the summer.?

The Ohio State women's basketball team opens Big Ten play at 8 p.m. Friday in Wisconsin's Kohl Center.

The Buckeyes (13-0) are ranked ninth and one of the surprises of the pre-conference schedule. They have survived nicely so far without four-time Big Ten player of the year Jantel Lavender behind a guard-oriented offense triggered by Sammy Prahalis and Tayler Hill.

I had OSU as a contender heading into the season with Penn State, Iowa, Michigan State and Purdue. The conference media and coaches made the Lions the pre-season favorite followed by the Boilermakers.
I posted Michigan, Northwestern and Illinois as pretenders. Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin brought up the rear. Obviously, I knew nothing. But hey, conjecture is fun.

Nebraska's first run as a Big Ten team has begun spectacularly. The Huskers are 11-1 and have a prime time player in forward Jordan Hooper and a solid point guard in Lindsey Moore. They play at Penn State (10-2) on Friday in what looks like the most interesting match-up among the openers.

Penn State appears to be as advertised with point guard Alex Bentley, the preseason choice as player of the year with Prahalis, and shooting guard Maggie Lucas leading the way.

Michigan (11-2) is solid and an absolute contender. The Wolverines beat Ohio State twice last season, but were snubbed by the NCAA Tournament because they won only 17 games. They look poised to crack the 20-win mark this time around. Michigan is at Illinois in its opener. The Illini (6-7) have double-double machine Karisma Penn inside, but haven't started as strongly as I thought they might.

Ladies struggling in the first half with Bucky, but close the first half with a 2-0 run and open the 2nd with a 17-2 run. Defensive intensity up this half and Wisky has remembered that they can't shoot for shit.

Now up by 16.

Tayler Hill is a goddess.
