2010 Winter Olympics tidbits

The Canadians were snubbed in front of the home crowd though, which has to suck.
I've been cheering for many Canadian athletes but in this instance I say good... they cost Apollo a shot at the gold in that race and he made a great comeback to shut them out. Apollo's interview was as classy as it gets. He knew he had that race.

That was karma. The brother with the beard - nothing wrong with him. The one without the beard can go to hell. He took out Celski and damn near took out Ohno.

Glad someone else saw this too.

Can not believe they disqualified Celski after the fucking Canadian GRABBED and HELD ON to him and lost him that race. I understand at this level of speed skating there will be nudging and slight pushing, but that was rape.

And he gets disqualified and doesnt move on.

Unreal.

Ya, snubbed wasn't the right word, more like shut out. I was just expressing that when 3 out of 5 guys medal, it sucks to have the 2 guys who don't medal by from the home country.

if the canadian knocked Ohno to the ground, what is the end result? Does Ohno get a bronze for being there at the point of the interference?

in the finals, no..if you crash, your out....it's like what happened to that south korean in the...1500 was it? i dont remember the distance, that allowed ohno and the other american to medal, even though he was in 2nd and was the one that was taken out, he wasnt given a medal

I missed that race, just saw a few clips just now.

If someone gets DQ'd in the finals for taking someone out, does 4th place then get a bronze?

Yes. Ohno actually got a gold medal that way on a controversial call in a previous Olympics.

Like the commentator said, in a final heat, there's no recourse for you if you're the victim of something like that. The perpetrator can be DQ'd, but if you fall and don't finish you can't be moved up into the spot you occupied at the time of the crash like they do in earlier rounds. I guess the only thing that stops somebody from just straight taking out somebody they don't like on purpose is honor among thieves.

Men's curling between Canada and Great Britain is on CNBC right now.

They're making unbelieveable shots. Razor-thin takeouts, back-to-back double-takeouts by each team, a double-takeout to score 3.

These teams are bound to meet in the medal round.

There are 10 teams, and after they all play each other, 4 advance to the semis.

The commentators were interviewing Wayne Gretzky a moment ago - and in between some slightly misogynistic comments about what women can and can't do in sports he made a pretty good point - it takes a great deal of skill for these sweepers to go down the ice, sweep in front of a traveling rock and step around all of the others that are still in play. I've been watching curling all week, and I haven't seen someone trip on one of those yet. Players in other sports make little physical and mental errors along those lines all the time, but I haven't seen a sweeper stumble over a rock yet.

Oh, and I also wanted to point out something else. While Tate Forcier is talking about getting "swoll" and breaking two-hun, I'm watching curling and every single man - and some of the women too - are easily bigger than him.

Were they talking seriously about combined men's and women's teams a while ago?

2 of each on each team, and there's another Olympic sport. The world needs more curling.

The possibilities are endless.
